Just saw on Sky Sports that we might make a move for Phillips.
Personally I dont think he is the answer and that we should really try and get Shevcenko.

I dont think Phillips is "good enough" for United.

Opinions ?

Super Kev is a bit on the mediocre side.Plus he has a really crap nickname.

Shevcenko is obviously a better option. But I doubt we have the money for that deal. The Ukrainian would want gaurenteed first team football anyway(it's why he is currently unsettled). So what? I hear you cry.
Well, it would mean abandoning the lone striker 5 in midfield formation we now have.
Do we really want to throw that away and have the same problem of fitting Veron and Scholsey in the same side again?
No. Shevchenko would only be viable if he were prepared to rotate with Nistelrooy. And we have to ask ourselves how would Ruud react to that as well?

Someone like Phillips is perhaps a more realistic option. He plays a game physical and predatory enough to cope with being a lone striker but he wouldn't necessarily demand an automatic place in the side every week.

I think Phillips is a good call. Get on the phone Alex.

I would personally put Phillips in the Bracket of Dwight Yorke just before we bought him in 98. He seems to be able to play both the holding striker and lone striker's role equally well (not Ruud's class, but who has been lately?). If we could tempted Sunderland with a 8-9 million bid it could be a good buy, especially it it's true that he wants out of Sunderland. Have a feeling he'd rather be a squad player at United than at Sunderland.

no.
Don't fancy him at all.far too ordinary.

I dont want Sheva to put it quite blunty. Not saying we have any, but a huge signing like his could lead to ego clashes (the press's dream). Remember the last time the press got at the club (Veron) and we wont nothing that year!

Sheva is class but id rather we bring in Webber or Vassell... he looks deadly this season.

P.s then theres Diego!

I think coming to United could just re-energise Phillips. He may not be World Class but I think he's a bit better than ordinary.

His stock has fallen somewhat recently, so if we could perhaps nick him for £6 million maybe? it would be worth a gamble.

Remember, what we basically need is an experienced understudy to Ruud at the right price. Either that or some oustanding young player(?) who'll be prepared to learn from the Ruudmeister.

Vassell is a good call, he'd come with less baggage and prima donna status than the Ukrainian. But unfortunately because he's young and English(and hugely talented) he'd come at the same kind of price. Villa would probably ask for something ridiculous like £40 million.

I don't see Diego or Webber(unless he toughens up) as lone striker material. Vassell may be a shortarse but he's strong and lightening quick.

I still think Phillips could be a cut-price option.

What with all the uefa talk bollox of the 50% british players talk I think it would be a good buy wither him or wayne rooney.

There's more speculation about Lopez in today's Observer too.. ties in with the £12m Lazio owe us, so I expect £10-14m would be enough to do it. Word is he's been in contact with Veron who has said positive things about United.

Not sure I'd want him though. He's good but I'd rather have someone with Premiership experience and who really wanted to play for us, rather than being the makeweight in some asset firesale.

I'd only take him on a Bosman and only then on reasonable wages. I don't rate him TBH.

if he was any good he'd have been playing for a top side 3 years ago. I dont rate him that highly.
For the same price we could get the younger Christie from Derby, who would score more goals AND hes a United fan.

Christie was class in the premiership.
now hes in a cack team, with a manager whos up to his neck in bung scandals, at a club who are 30m in debt and dont know which players will be paid from week to week.
do you blame him for having a bad match?

He is another who could do a job, he isnt my first choice but he could be a potent weapon.

Sheva can play the right wing role in our new formation. He used to play there for Ukraine if I remember correctly.
