Liverpool caretaker manager Phil Thompson has won manager of the month for his work at Anfield for the past two months while manager Gerard Houllier recovers from his heart surgery.

To be fair, Thompson has done superbly since stepping in for Gerard Houllier and has suffered just one defeat in charge, in the Champions League defeat by Barcelona.

The second piece of news for The Reds saw midfielder Danny Murphy scoop the Player of the Month award for the form that has seen him break into the England squad.

Thompson immediately dedicated his award to Houllier as he continues to recover from his heart operation.

The Frenchman made his first public appearance since the operation to present Murphy and Thompson with their respective awards.

In my opinion Thompson earned his right to be manager of the month but to be fair there were not many who could have, and he deserves it. He got a Liverpool team to perform in Europe and Domestically and with the manager struggling for health he has done marvelous to boost the health of him. Houllier is training Thompson to be the next Liverpool manager I am sure.
Murphy has done OK and deserved an England call-up and apart from maybe van Nistelrooy at a push or Henry I can not think of many who could have got in with a chance either.
On the subject of assistant managers, Liverpool are lucky to have one like Thompson and ever since Brian Kidd and Steve McClaren failed to resist the lure of being a manager (Which is a shame they took the leap to quickly in my opinion and the fact that they have not done too well at the new clubs is a sign that just becuase you can do well as an assistant for a big club does not mean you can manager a club straight away, but in fairness Thompson has proved otherwise) Manchester United have struggled, and Assistant Manager in my opinion is one of the biggest roles as he is the main coach and takes care of the small things and is the getaway for the players and the go between of the players and manager. I remember Brian Kidd had a great effect on the younger players.
I still belive Manchester United, though they may not have succeeded, made a move for Preston North End manager David Moyes to replace McClaren, and I sincerly hope he becomes a manager of Manchester United in the future.

My sincere congratulations to the big nosed scouse git ;) . Sickens me to say it but he deserves the award.

Thompson is the one thing I think we currently have a right to envy on Merseyside as a capable deputy to AF is sorely lacking, we're struggling for form with Alex fit, feck knows what would happen if he were laid up for any length of time.

Best joke I've heard for awhile. What? You're not joking. He really couldn't use a cnut. Then why is Babbel still at Shitfield!
