Really good interview. Talks about his career and the injuries he suffered. Sounds like absolute hell to be honest. Done his knee in a Blackburn, couldnt straighten his knee, without injections every pass he made was agony. He says he was on so many pain killing injections that he'd only find out 5 hours after a game if he'd suffered a major injury because the pain would be so devastating. Being made out to be a joke figure when he was waking up in agony during the night wasnt ideal either.

Seems like a well spoken, nice guy.

Injury prone players had been blaming us since Hargreaves. I bet in the near future we will have similar interviews from Malacia and shaw

I admire Van Basten. He was 10 times the player these players were and he called it a day when it became evident that it was over.

Don’t blame the player. Medical team should have said enough is enough

Was the knee injury before or after we gave him that insane extension?

He should have been made to retire and moulded into a coaching role maybe, no sense in him playing through pain and damaging his body like that.

Players can't be made to retire. They do that out of their own free will.

How do you make someone retire?

If what's in the OP was true then the fault is on the medical team to force him to play through that. Pain aside such an action must have been detrimental for long term health and safety of the athlete
It does make you wonder about the Doctor's ethics. I can understand a player saying "I don't care about long term harm" but a doctor?

John Terry had painkilling injections every game and training session in a broken foot (rather than let it heal) for an entire season. He said it was worth it. Is a premier league title worth a lifelong limp? Maybe it is.

I dunno, maybe I've watched too much TV where doctors take oaths about "do no harm".

Noone can "make" him per say but if the club told him he can't play on medical grounds then what options does he have?
Van Basten once described the days towards his retirement perfectly. They basically told him that he will have to endure more complex operations and that the chances of recovery were basically nil. Then they asked him how to proceed because he was under contract and it was up to him what happened next. That was pre bosman ruling IE a time when clubs had far more power then today

When? Even van Basten took the decision by himself. Docs can lead the horse to the water but. ..
Petit for example. Knee problems like Jones. Was advised to pack it in or else.

In Jones case either they thought it was something he could play on with or they got it wrong. I don’t believe they did it deliberately but they have access to the best of the best resources. If there was a problem with that knee that required him to quit then they could have convinced him

Docs can advice players to retire but they can't force a person under contract out unless....they pay him the reminder of his contract. That's financially bad because it would mean paying a lump sum at one go rather then having it distributed in x amount of years

The player can of course retire but that means renouncing to alot of money.

Clubs are insured for this type of thing

The medics have an obligation to advise the player if they are putting their body at risk (being in a wheelchair for example). It shouldn’t come to money because they are insured

Ethics aside it's a bad management. I can understand playing with pain killers in a very important finals of an important cup. But playing week in week out on a run of the mill league game?

It depends on the player though doesn't it.

Hargreaves wasn't forced to play when he was injured and was already a crock before we signed him. Ferguson got fed up with him after a few years so he can hardly blame United for him having glass legs.

Shaw had the ankle break but then also has a pattern of managers questioning his fitness and a history of conveniently getting injured whenever things start going bad, and conveniently returning to fitness when a new manager comes in or international tournament comes around.

Malacia hasn't blamed anyone for anything and Jones hasn't either. Jones was also juat injured all the time. No convenience about it and we don't know what he was being told or advised by the medical staff or specialists. They might have been up front and said it can't be fixed so it's up to you if you want to try and carry on playing.

Nobody deserves to be in pain, but didn't he choose money (seeing out contract) over retirement voluntarily?
He also got a new contract under Ole(?), and he did that whilst in agony and pain from (not) playing?
I'm not gonna watch the vid, but it feels like he himself saw the €€€ and endured his pain to continue the life of luxury. If he had retired instead of lingering on in the shadows, he would have had heaps of sympathy.

Wow there are some disgusting takes on this thread. Jones did his best. He had huge injuries. The insurance company seem to be flawless. His contract could have been cancelled if the insurance company agreed. They didn’t want to pay out so the club was left holding the baby.
Remember when Big Paul won the PFA player of the year. He couldn’t walk either. Just a pity it ended like it did for Jones.

People like you who have this opinion are probably the people who DO need to watch the video.

Makes me feel good that I never accepted the option to give an injured player a pain injection on football manager.

Players like this can't win though can they, they either play through the pain and screw up their long term career or they take precautions with the pain they feel but then blasted by dinosaurs managers like mourinho or sky sports pundits like keane who will say a player is soft and a whimp for not playing through the pain barrier

He would have become a world class player had he not developed that knee issue I think, instead of a meme. How different it could have been for him.

That was Woodwards bankers hat on thinking of players as an asset, fit or not. So his thinking, give Jones a £20 mill 5 year contract, or pay £30 mill transfer and then a £20 mill contract to a new player. Looks better on the books to keep Jones.
Fun fact, well I thought it was funny; when they put the team out in the paper and also who wasnt fit, instead of putting injury: Phil Jones, they put Phil injury Jones. I thought it was his new nickname!

He was just too

He was a bit naive going into physical contact situations. He needed to be a bit more discerning and protect himself more. Great players understand how to protect themselves and extend their careers.

Football is his life. The idea any of us would go "actually retirement sounds grand!" over playing for Man United is dumb. He shouldnt have retired if he felt he could get back. People seem to think these players are robots. When you're a kid you dont dream of earning 150k a week while waking up during the night in agony. His dream is to play football. So you have to give yourself the best chance of coming back, instead of taking yourself out of the game.

If he done his knee at Blackburn why did we still sign him? Why did the medical team not spot it? Why did we extend his contract? So much stupidity on the club's part. Feel for Jones but we're not a charity, and if we had competent people in charge he'd have been gone by the end of his first contract

Then you probably shouldn't waste peoples time by posting baseless nonsense?
