Phil Foden - [insert title update here as he is past the "has he got potential?" point now]

Insulting a player has gone on for many decades, right or wrong it's part of the fan culture.

Insulting not the player, but a member of his family isn't something that happens very often at all, which is why Pep was asked the question and why this thread is going.

If Man United fans had sung that Foden was ugly or was shit or had a bad haircut or was a slag then nobody would've cared. That didn't happen though, they went for his family.

I'm going to agree to disagree, this is just going to go around in circles but I enjoyed the debate at least.

It’s clearly not worse to call someone’s mum a slag than tell them they look like a rat.

If Fodens mum had never made the papers this wouldn’t even be a story. The only reason some people are taking so much proxy offence to it is because she actually has acted badly in the public eye.
I disagree - big difference. Going after someone's mum, that's just not on in my book. But looks is fair game.

He’s been awful for a while but nothing gets said. When it’s one of our players it makes the newspapers everyday.

To be fair, Rashford stunk out the joint for the best part of two seasons and you still had pundits asking "why was he dropped?"

You were right about one thing, though. Crybaby grown men outraged at the fact someone didn't like their lame chant are the exact people who would vote reform.

I highly doubt this would get such a lengthy article from the BBC if any other fanbase had sung it, but I gave it a read. What I think a lot of journalists are failing to grasp is that many fans behave in a stadium in a similar way to how they'd behave in a pub with their mates. I'm not sure if it's because those journalists are in 'work mode', sat in the corporate section with their colleagues, it's almost like they expect the pissed up blokes in the TRA to behave with a modicum of professionalism, and then act surprised when they hear some derogatory chants.
