Di Canio to quit West Ham

Di Canio is ready to leave East London for Italy

Paolo di Canio has revealed he does not intend to sign another contract at West Ham - and will return to Italy when his current deal runs out at the end of next season.
Di Canio seemed to be on the verge of a transfer to Manchester United only for the Champions League registration deadline to run out without a deal having been concluded.

The failure of Dwight Yorke to agree a move to Middlesbrough, along with a question mark over the length of contract 33-year-old di Canio, would sign put an end to the proposed transfer.

Even though Sir Alex Ferguson, who has been interested in the Italian for some time, is now set to stay on at Old Trafford, di Canio is concentrating his focus on West Ham.

Now the striker will see out the end of his contract, which expires in the summer of 2003, but will then leave the club on a free transfer.

"I don't want another contract. I have the next three months plus one year and then, for family reasons, I want to go back to Italy," he told the Barking & Dagenham Post.

"Before then, I want to give my best, not only on the pitch but I want to try to help young players like Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe."

Di Canio, who began a three-match ban and missed his side's FA Cup defeat by Chelsea, added: "I want to let them understand that they have to prove something every day - that is my mission."
