Paul Robinson

Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson has reaffirmed his commitment to Leeds by signing a one-year extension to his contract.

Earlier this season, Robinson was linked with a move to Manchester United at a time when Fabien Barthez was experiencing a tough time.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has acted quickly to prevent the possibility of the England Under-21 international leaving, with the new deal taking him up until the summer of 2006.

Ridsdale categorically insisted Robinson was not for sale, claiming the 22-year-old was the future of Leeds and England for years to come.

Robinson has not played for the first team in just over a year because of the form of England keeper Nigel Martyn.

United secretary Ian Silvester saying: "This shows our belief in his ability.

"We see him as the long-future of the club in that position.

"While Nigel has the number one jersey at the moment, Paul will one day take over his mantle."

Robinson could easily start somewhere else. Bad move on his part to stay at Leeds imo.

Which is why he's been given a gigantic ONE YEAR contract!

They act act more stupid than they look!

Why a bad move?...Martyn is in the twilight of his career at Leeds and Paul will take over and be our and Englands number 1 for years to come.

fjred.....get your facts right and then you might not look so stupid - it is a extension to his contract that keeps him at Leeds for 4 years.

I didn't realize that Martyn was 36 this year Marching. In that case it should't be too long before Robinson steps in. He's been brilliant every time i've seen him, particularly during Martyn's extended injury last year. The Barca match at Elland Rd springs to mind.

I'd say Robinson has far more potential than Kirkland. If my main keeper was injured tomorrow I'd rather Robinson than Kirkland any day.

I'm obviously biased as is Marching with Robinson, however Kirkland is about a year younger than Robinson and has already displaced him as the U21 England keeper (he was fantastic against Dutch U21's), so David Platt obviously rates him above Robinson. Howver Robinson is a top class keeper, just not as good as Kirkland ;)

Might it be fair to say that as he's 22 Robinson won't be or isn't already eligible to play for the under 21? Perhaps that's why Kirkland managed to "displace" Robinson ;)

This was a few months ago (anyway over 21's can be picked for the U21's e.g Carragher, Murphy), and Robinson was being used on the bench at the time, so that displaces your theories ;)

How over 21 can you be and still play for the under 21s? My theory is still valid ta ;)

Not sure i remember once a while back, i think it was Glen Hoddle (or was it Venables) wanted to play Redknapp in the U21's, he was about 25 at the time

I don't remember that. Sounds dodgy to me. Regardless it doesn't change the fact that Kirkland was merely being tested out against weaker opposition ;)

Here's a link to a match report of the latest under 21 played a couple of days ago. Note the keeper who started the game (and also the keeper who finished the game) ;)

And note the fact that kirkland was injured for the past month and only started training today, as for weaker opposition do you even follow the U"!'s he was played in vital Youth world cup qualifiers

Well I can't account for the bad judgement of the U21 management team if they really do prefer Kirkland to Robinson ;)

I think players who start tournaments (Olympics qualifing or European championships qualifing) can play throughout them even when they are past 21. Ofcource, they can't play in the next tournament, they must be 21 or less when it starts.

As for Kirkland, a lot of U-21 coaches like to use the younger players to give them more experience rather than those who've been in the squad longer, so that might explain it. Or not!

robinson is an AMAZING shot stopper...but kirkland is better at commanding his area, dealing with crosses (he is 6 foot 7), and distributing the ball. i don't think you can go wrong either way...

Sadly both of these promising players will be forced to take a back seat to Nicky Weaver. :D <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[No No]" />

During friendlies yes, but not during vital qualifyers, during Platt's reign whenever Kirkland hs been fit he has been chosen to play.
