Paul Merson has questioned Manchester United’s decision to hand Bruno Fernandes a new contract despite not having a new manager in place.

What a joker, if we were talking about a fringe player, someone like Jesse Lingard he would have a point but when it comes to a clubs prized assets they need to be tied to a long term contract to ensure that if we were to decide to sell them we can hold out for a good transfer fee.

Sadly when you hear Pawl Merson and Rae Parlour on the radio you end up thinking crikey have the beers fried their brains or have they been this daft since long time, they really would make a terrific duo of east end gangsters in Eastenders to replace Dan Dier.

His previous deal was expiring in 2025. This one will expire in 2026. Both included option to extend by 1 year

I agree. 3-4 years left on the contract. We keep giving massive, massive money to players who have won feck all.

Out of all the big issues currently revolving around the club, Bruno renewing his contract is so friggin waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down the list.

Bemused why this has been given so much coverage, negative coverage at that.

Might be worth checking the rest of the forum first. This is so last week.

If Bruno adds to his defensive game and perhaps shows up in the big games, I’d be partial to him extending his contract. But the truth is, he hasn’t on both accounts.

He has however somewhat carried a team of disinterested professionals albeit stumbling along the way.

Agreed but it does highlight the core problem with our club - we are reactive in rewarding players on immediate circumstances rather than forward planning. This is why we are where we are now as a club - languishing in mediocrity

Agreed. The new manager may prefer to play without Bruno so why extend the contract? It's gotten to the point where I'm amused by their incompetence rather than outraged.

In much the same way that modern art is 'art'.
Ah, so Paul mersons thought process is akin to a trustafarian throwing a balloon full of kangaroo piss at a half empty can of special brew.
That makes more sense than it ever should

Bruno has carried us to two top fours. If not a new contract, he definitely deserved a big bonus.

He's gonna be getting 600m, 700m.. a billion pounds a week... 150 pounds a week.

For the most part I feel like Merson has no clue, but on this subject is he wrong? I'm not entirely sure if I'm being honest. I think the issue we have is because the squad is currently so devoid of quality, we cannot afford another Pogba situation in which we could potentially lose Bruno for free, so the club have acted by giving him a bumper pay rise. Truth be told though, he has been very poor for the most part this season and is a concern for us.

How this guys opinions still get publicity is beyond me, talks absolute garbage

He's the opposite of common sense

Given he's contracted to 2025 I actually agree with him. Nothing that can't wait 6-12 months.

Try and be kind with Merson guys. He has his well documented problems, so just think about him in a positive way, and think ahh that's nice Merse, good to see you out and about.

Exactly. And just like that piss-soaked can of special brew was put into an art gallery by some overqualified fool, so too was Merson put on TV.

He is actually speaking sense. ALl talk on here about a "prized asset" and "carrying us to two top fours". He has been poor for the last twelve months, his attitude has dropped and he waslready under contracted to his thirties and we dont have a new amnager yet.

WHy give a new contrct that adds time into his thirties on a higher wage that if he has past his peak makes him harder then to sell.

What he did in his first six months here was wonderful, doesnt justify a new contract from how he has been for some time now. Hopefully a new manager and transfer windows gets him back firing again, he is obiously a good player though personalyl not convinced he is a great one like so many seem to think.

Personally think we should have seen how he did over the next season under a new manager before thinkign of contracts when he would still have two years to go, so Merson in my opinion was right

Sick of hearing this myth. Last season he was awful from January onwards and pre xmas we were pretty poor as a team. 2 goals from open play from January, one in a draw, four assists 2 in a 9-0 win. He didn’t carry this team to second last season.

Needs a proper coach to improve that, hopefully Ten Hag can get on the case when he arrives

Yea, the season starts in August. Not sure why mentioning January, a totally arbitrary point in time, means anything. He’s been far and away our best player since he signed.

He was already contracted to 2025. I agree with Merson here.

Just to break it down for you , length of contract wasn’t the issue , he was on a low wage compared to other senior players. It’s kind of obvious he would look to increase his wages looking around at the dressing room

Yes but he was already tied into a long term contract. To me it’s shortsightedness by the club (as per) as Ten Hag or whoever the new manager may be might not find a place for Bruno.

I just think it seems a daft decision for the sake of a couple of months when if for whatever reason it doesn’t work we could move Bruno on. There’s absolutely no chance of that now.

Yea….not last season.

As for the rest, you’re not sure why 23 games out of 38 means anything as to whether Bruno has carried us to top four last year.

He’s been far and away our best player? Statistically yes…..performance wise I don’t think he was our best player last season and he certainly hasn’t been this season.

Why not wait until new manager comes in. Personally, I don’t see how Bruno fits in with ETH so this could be a problem.
Been an absolute passenger this season and become quite dislikable with his moaning and gesturing, whilst playing shite. Mersin is correct.

Suppose we've now handed him an obscene salary to the point where no other club would come close to matching it? What could go wrong.

He’s right, but then again this club is in a situation where basically any other contract extension would be even more foolish. I can’t really think of a player whose extension would make me genuinely cheerful.

Merson is a twat but he has a point this time. Bruno is a player that could potentially infuriate Ten Hag with his wastefulness and decision making.

I'm worried that Merson has gotten a few things right regarding us this season
