'Prisoner' actor Patrick McGoohan dies in LA
Jan. 14, 2009, 11:49 AM EST

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Patrick McGoohan, an Emmy-winning actor who created and starred in the cult classic television show "The Prisoner," has died. He was 80.

McGoohan died Tuesday in Los Angeles after a short illness, his son-in-law, film producer Cleve Landsberg, said Wednesday.

McGoohan won two Emmys for his work on the Peter Falk detective drama "Columbo," and more recently appeared as King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film "Braveheart."

But he was best known as the title character Number Six in "The Prisoner," a surreal 1960s British series in which a former spy is held captive in a small village and constantly tries to escape.

Did he ever get out?

R.I.P. Patrick!

Shit, I was reading about the remake of the prisoner today a looked at the wikis of the old one, I was surprised to learn he was alive

Iconic 1960s TV actor of Britian's Golden TV age.

The story goes that he was the original choice to play James Bond but McGoohan who had always refused to kiss on-screen felt the he couldn't play the character. Apparently, it was McGoohan who recommended Sean Connery.

He should have had greater success and recognition but like many great British actors of the 1960 he decided to make his name and fortune in America but with very limited success.

RIP

I remember sitting up late with my dad to watch Danger man.
Never really got the whole Prisoner thing (nobody actually did) except I think that it was a reflection on being pigeon holed as an actor.
But in 1998, I was in North Wales and made the trip to Port Merion where the Prisoner was filmed.

McGoohan never did sex scenes. As mentioned above he turned down James Bond for that reason.
Married to same woman for 57 years. Fair play to him.

Born in New York, raised in Ireland and settled in Britain, I think he will be fondly remembered in three countries at least.

Genuinely nice guy.
Rest in Peace.
