Patrice Evra wants to leave Manchester United at the end of the season and finish his career at Real Madrid, Goal.com UK can reveal.

The Frenchman has opened talks with the club over an extension to his contract, which ends in June 2012, but has told friends that he is still open to a move to Spain.

Evra, who joined United for £5.5 million from Monaco in 2006, is willing to put pen to paper to secure his own future and at the same time help the club maximise their return if they cash in on one of their most saleable assets.

Nevertheless, he is holding out for a transfer to the continent and what, for the 29-year-old, could represent the final, major contract of his career.

The Glazer family, who own United, have promised manager Sir Alex Ferguson that he will have £50m at his disposal to spend on new players next summer in addition to whatever he generates from player sales.

Ferguson does not want to lose Evra, who is widely regarded as one of the premier left-backs in the world and was a target last summer for Real manager Jose Mourinho.

“Patrice originally wanted to leave in January but now he is happy to sign a new contract and leave at the end of the season,” said a United source. “He is concerned about where the club are heading and is attracted by the possibility of playing for Real, a club he really admires.”

Ironically, the left-back was the most critical United player of Wayne Rooney’s claim last month before his contract U-turn that the 18 times League winners lack ambition, saying that “if one player doesn’t trust the others he should not play in the team”.

The source added: “Evra was the most angry when Rooney said he was going to leave and criticised the quality of the squad but that doesn’t mean he swears blind loyalty to Manchester United. Like any player, he wants what is best for himself and his family and sees Real Madrid as the perfect move.”

Similar to the Rooney deal then.

Oh God, I just clicked the link.

It's a real article, that someone has actually sat down and taken the time to write. That people have subsequently sat down and taken the time to read.

 even if this was true, it may be time for him to move on anyway. His form over the last few weeks has been average, and I don't see the same desire he used to play with. Maybe its a lack of form, or just a hangover from a torrid world cup.
I think Fabios potential would soften the blow of this one though.

WE were laughing at Rooney rumours back then, I'll not take anything for granted now.

Whoever wrote that article, I want to take the yellow pages and beat him to death with it

Rooney's news was in every newspaper. Every Journalist specifically mentioned that the source of that news was very strong. Whilst here we've the ever reliable Goal.com sources, there is a big difference b/w the two.

If they want him they can give us Marcelo. It's all rubbish ofcourse

well hasnt the rooney saga opened up a can of worms...i hope every player is now not thinking of testing the water and seeing how much money they can get paid by playing transfer games through the media.......

off course the report could be full of it..............i hope it is anyway

When the Rooney dealie was going on he said something along the lines "If Man. Utd. would lose ambition I'd leave straight away".

Well, the media just made that if into are and therefor Evra must be leaving:wenger:
