MANCHESTER UNITED have declared an interest in Senegalese star Papa Bouba Diop, according to agent Nicholas Geiger. Diop has emerged as one of the stars of Sengal's brilliant showing at the World Cup, and United have faxed both his agent and his French club Lens to inform him of their interest.

However, the player does not yet qualify for a work permit, so any deal will have to be put on ice until the new year.

"Lens and I have a fax from United informing us officially that the English club are interested in Bouba.

"For the moment Bouba cannot yet play in England as he hasn't played a sufficient number of games for Senegal to get a work permit.

"So he won't have a chance to play in England before January."

Diop scored the historic opening goal of World Cup 2002, which proved to be the winner against holders France - in one of the biggest ever shocks in the tournament.

But the midfielder did not rest on his laurels and scored two more in the group game against Uruguay, confirming his place as one of the stars of the tournament.

United's interest, should it prove to be true, is an indication that manager Sir Alex Ferguson is still looking to bolster his squad.

The Red Devils relinquished their hold on the Premiership title to Arsenal last season, but are desperate to wrest back domestic dominance from the London club.

A goal scoring Vierra. One for the future. I hope the deal takes place innthe end . Even if it is n 2004 :)

isn't this the guy Liverpool seems to have some contact to ?? .. Senegal team has too many "Diop" in them ... so confusing !! ... if this chap is from Lens then I suppose is another guy ... the one the Scoucers is signing is from Sedan I believe ...

Liverpool have Diouf, not Diop, there are two Diop's, Malik and Bouba.

Still, sounds like an agent who is trying to find his player a big club. Even he admits we can't actually use Diop as he can't get a work permit.

This is the guy that is attracting interest from Arsenal, MUFC and Liverpool.

But Arsenal reckon Vieira is staying, Liverpool already have their 2 Senegals signed, 3 would be ridiculous, so we're hanging in there.

Supposed to be the new Vieira - I'm sceptical, but its interesting that we keeo being linked to midfielders, goalkeepers even though ours are staying put.

At least we are being linked to almost every player on the earth.. or would you rather it's all quiet on the transfer news front? It will be boring ... ;)

Bumping an old thread rather than creating a new one. This fella' was underrated in my opinion. Decent player, still apparently fit, wages not too prohibitive surely. Why not a pay-as-you-play season contract from the likes of Carlisle or Leeds?

Wasn't he linked to United every transfer window for about four or five years?

I always thought of him as a very good midfielder and quite underrated.

A mate of mine said he's the best player that he's seen live. Was a Fulham-Man Utd match. I obviously didn't believe him.

Edgar Davids should sign him and play alongside, for the craic. Barnet would make the money back in increased exposure/merchandise/tv sales. Would be interesting as feck seeing the two of them together IMO!

Sounds like us. Going after players we may not have any chance of getting.
