Argentina forward Martin Palermo has been ruled out of the World Cup after breaking two bones in his left leg while celebrating a goal for Villarreal in their Copa del Rey win over Levante.
The highly-rated hitman, who was pressuring national coach Marcelo Bielsa to pick him as he last appeared for Argentina in the Copa America against Paraguay two years ago, had jumped on a fence after scoring eight minutes into extra-time following the 1-1 draw.
As the crowd surged forward to celebrate with Palermo, the fence behind the goal from which he was hanging collapsed, causing the player injuries that will keep him out of for the rest of the season.
