Just had a look at our transfers since the summer of 1999, and I realised our transfer deficit is "only" £35m.

In

Ruud - £18m
Veron - £28m
Carroll - £3m
Forlan - £8m
Barthez - £7m
Fortune - £2m
Taibi - £4m
Silvestre - £4m

Total - £74m

Out

Stam - £16m
Wilson - £2m
Greening - £2m
Cole - £8m
Curtis - £2m
Higgingbotham - £2m
Taibi - £3m
Berg - £2m
Healey - £2m

Total - £39m

Most if not all is recouped by our profitability and sponsorship agreements. It would seem as though a significant chunk of the Rio deal would be covered by Nike's first yearly installment...which is encouraging since we still have at least one, ideally two players to buy after Rio.

I know - but it's go to show that there's probably more funds available than most people think, especially as the newspapers are keen on pointing out that we spent £50m last year

There'll be a firesale at Anfield if they don't win anything again next year. No one wants their dead wood, so one of Owen, Gerrard, or Hyypia will have to be sold. ;)

They're full of shit the RVN money was from the year before.

Nah, don't think so - their financial situation is sound. But it's worth mentioning when they go on about how much we have spent, and hence can't afford anything else than Rio this summer - especially as when they've secured Bowyer and we have secured Rio, our transfer deficit is the same over the last three year. Then we can start comparing other incomes for the two clubs over the same period ;)

Davo says that as long as Liverpool get more points than they did last season that will be improvement enough...he got a little lost though when I mentioned that the only REAL way to improve on 2nd is by coming first.

My money is on our trying to work a deal with Lazio for Sorin, as part compensation from the Stam money they still owe us. Possibly, Sorin and Lopez.

You won't tho...cos you're a selling club.

A bit like Derby

and doesn't Risdale know it..

If you had any sense you'd pull out of the Rio deal and say that you're not prepared to pay more than 20 odd million..

Beat the big nosed twat whilst he's down.. ;)

That would benefit us. He could still turn around and sell Bowyer abroad or to another Prem side for similar money..which would leave us exactly where we were before this afternoon.

You're only the 26th person to suggest this

But, what has Phil 'Magnificent' Thompson got to do with it?

;)

i heard Sorin's gotta spend a season before he can be transferred out - maybe Lazio'll arrange a loan for a seaso n- but he's still worth just 7 or 8m - i thought we were owed around 12m...your thoughts on that, Piersifal

he'd be a great addition to the squad, but might feck things up for Mika who is a season or two away from being a world class LB and the only way he's gonna get there is by playing all the time - as a backup for Giggs, well he'd be more of a left-sided Butt
from what i saw of him at the WC, funnily enough for a LB/left-sided defensive midfield player, he spends more time in the opposition penalty box than Bobby Carlos! any Cruzeiro watchers who disagree?

of course, if we signed him, we'd retain our crown - being voted ugliest Prem. side by the housewifery, poor old Gary would be off the hook, and no more Beckham hair jokes <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" /> <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

According to The Sun today, we only have to pay £14.9 million up front for Rio; £14.2 million is to be paid in July 2003 and additional payments up to £4 million over the next five years depending on United's performance. If this is true, then I would suspect that our spending spree isn't over. Hopefully we can still afford to buy a quality striker and a fullback. We just won't have as much to spend next year.
