Hey guys,
I need some help here,
I would like to know why;

Kuszack is called PIG;

Gary Neville is called GAZ;

Rooney is Called Wazza;

Fletcher is called Pletch;

Why we have '-sy' added to Giggs and Scholes.

Thanks

I think you'll find it's just a 'y' attached to the end of those players whose name ends with an 's' sound.
Incidentally, the players never called Keane 'Keano', it was always 'Keaney' them, just as Butt was 'Butty' etc.
I never heard many fans call Mark Hughes 'Sparky' either, we always used to call 'Hughesy', especially at the match, there were no chants or anything for 'Sparky'.

Some utter cnut back when I was on newbies had a fecking rant at me because I referred to Hughes as Hughesy!

Anyway...

Rooney - Wazza or Roon (although I haven't heard the latter used in quite a while)

Ronaldo - Ronnie/Ron

Gary Neville - Red Nev/Gaz

Vidic - Vida

Ferdinand - Rio

John O Shea - Sheasy

This is because English people have a peculiar sense of humour, and enjoy putting their spare time into giving nicknames to footballers when they're not busy sipping their earl grey tea.

just kidding...

Nickname giving as a form of endearment is pretty common, it helps delude fans into fostering a make-believe close relationship between themselves and the players.

Which is also why fans of Arsenal/Chelsea/etc don't call our Giggs - Giggsy, Scholes, Scholesy so on and so forth. Likewise we don't call Sissoko momo or Reina pepe.

As for the Gaz/Wazza thing, I believe it has it's roots in English nickname giving.. The most famous -za guy would probably be Paul Gascoigne (Gazza). Some may call Darren Fletcher (and other darrens from other teams e.g. darren anderton) Dazza and so on, but these nicknames are not widespread.

In general the -y suffix is added to most last names, provided it can be added, and that it does not gay the name up too much.

In Ireland we add an -o suffix.

You would get Scholeso, Giggso, Wayno etc.

And Rio, of course :smirk:

finally a real answer to Chep's question, he asked why our players have those nicknames

Wes-The Longsight Libero
Scholes-heard him having a nickname "Archie" several years ago.
Michael Carrick said in an interview earlier this year that the United players call Vidic "psycho".

:)

I love being at the caf... the Norwegian forum I've frequented didn't care to use terms like "suffix" (Norwegian equivalent being "suffiks)

Also, most of them are just general English abbreviational names... that and the vicarious sense of familiarity.
