Remember a while back we, or maybe it was just me, were refelcting that we never replaced Ronny Johnsen as a utility centre back/ defensive mid player?

The consensus was that JOS had the required skills to fit the bill. Well, O'Shea is starting in the centre of midfiled tonight. Let's see how he does!

If he continues to progress like he is doing now he will surely be a better player than Ronny.

Great prospect.

It will be good to see O'Shea when he finally fills out his frame.

I don't know if he is as quick as Ronny was.

Can't remember who Ronny played when he was in Mid, but he was ace. He kept popping up around their box and was causing havoc. Shame he didnt appear there (or anywhere) with more regularity.

i posted in this forum (beep-beep) a week or so ago that i thought johnno seemed to have the necessary set of skill to play the holding mid. role. will be very interested to see how he does there

He played against the best..
ECL quarterfinal at Old Trafford against Porto 96-97 season, no Keane, so Ronny played there with Giggs and Becks. We won 4-0.
Juventus at home 1997-1998 season, again no Keane and he actually give Zidane a hell of a match. We won 3-2..
;)

And if I'm not mistaken Ronny also have played on the left wing once. Don't remember against who unfortunately..

He played against Inter there in 99 in the San Siro.

Did a great job.

Ronny was class. One of my all time favourite players.

O'Shea did ok today. Not sure if he's played there before but it took him a while to get into it, but when he did, he did fine. Even in the 90th mminute he was the furthest man forward making a Keane-esque surge into Burnley's penalty box!

Bit difficult that mate, in all honesty. If he didn't get those injuries he would have been IMO an absolute legend, rock solid CB, rock solid defencive mid. Fantastic player! :(

A kindred spirit!

One thing's for sure, Ronny was a better goalscorer than O'Shea!! ;)

Agreed, Ronny could have been a legend, but we'll never know. If John stays clear of the injuries he certainly has the ability

one of mine too, one of sir Alex best bargain buys IMO. I remember when he's perhaps the only player to ever successfully marked Ronaldo out of the game when the Brazilian is at his pomp.
About O'Shea played in midfield, I think read somewhere that he played there for the Ireland U-17 because he was too good to play in defence.. :)

Rock solid??? You cannot be referring to his legs. They were made of bisquits...

;)

Two different players really. Ronny was all about pace, think John will be a more accomplished, all-round defender.

I think John is too pedestrian to play in midfield, will be half-a-yard off the pace. It's rare that defenders can play in midfield, as you have to do everything so much quicker there, hence have to have both quicker feet and head.

Talking about pace, many on here still want him to play as a fullback. (Ohh I've been told not to do that) ;)

If he ends up as good as Johnsen, then I'll be very very very happy indeed.

O'Shea has been the find of the season so far. Top class defender.

I think we saw tonight that he certainly wont make a top class midfielder

It strikes me that SAF gave him a midfield row to help him work on his passing game. He's a quick study is JOS, and he's going to be one awesome defender.

Silvestre, Brown, Rio, O'Shea - Jesus H, there's some talent there

(still grinning)
:D

John can do a job on fullback, but he's a natural centre half.

Johnsen, however, played in every position bar in goal for Norway. He started of as a right winger, then played both as a striker, midfield and full back before he settled as a CB.

his bad luck with injuries ;)

O'Shea's still very young and still shows great maturity to merit the kind of comparison he is with one of the best Centre Backs we have had at United, injury or not. He is still not at the level of Ronny, surely, but, he is showing the potential and his steady performances are not doing him any harm, instead they are earning him plaudits. He is composed, he has speed and SAF is showing great confidence in him to put him to task at different positions including central midfield. Now, wasn't that a peach of a pass to set up Forlan to score?

He is setting very high standards for himself and he will be up there with the very best.

i wonder why we didn't keep him and let go of May instead if the board were looking to cut wages.

anyone knows the story?

Johnsen was allowed to go because he has proved to be 'unreliable' not in footballing terms, but, because of his injuries. Moreoever, he was out of contract and to renew his contract 'did not make much sense'. Sad, very sad... I know every Manchester United fan loves Ronny to death. Why May was not offloaded - I think it is only because he is still under contract with us.

but isn't May also unreliable in terms of his injuries? And if i'm not wrong he's also about 30. I'd personally would have given Johnsen a one year contract and try to offload May. Atleast Johnsen could have replaced Butt and Keane during their injuries. Sad.. Very sad indeed..

From what so far I watch from O'Shea, I'm glad that he can play well in any position at the back.
I think he just miss some header goals to match the qualities of Ronny.

it will slowly come, i think we have to give him time to develop

i think he played at CM last night against Burley.

SAF is surely taking good care of this guy.
