Oriol Romeu

Never heard of this kid but seems to be well thought-of and it's interesting that Chelsea have gone for an unproved youngster fairly cheap to fill out their squad. Wonder what the payment structure is and whether they have installed buy-back clauses etc if he's that good.

They've installed that buy back clause.

I was just about to say his name coming up reminded me of Chelsea signing Etock, they just seem to be buying the not so special Barca reserve player (from the admittedly little I have seen).

Weird strategy.

All depends how good he is. He might not be able to get in Barca's first team but that's no shame. Could be good enough for Chelsea though at some stage in the future. They obviously rate him.

Seems Barca need to offload some players to fund the Cesc deal, or they might have kept him.

Supposedly, Villas Boas targeted him while he was still with Porto.

Now, with Essien out for six months, Oriol is probably bought with a view of adding some depth to defensive midfield.

Given the age profile of your squad and the injury to Essien, is major investment rumoured and with the exception of Modric, who're the players you've been heavily linked with?

Before the appointment of AVB there were strong rumours about Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne joining. Neymar saga has been going for eons but now it appears he's either staying in Brazil for one more year or leaves for Spain.

Vilas Boas mentioned the necessity to assess the squad first as the reason for delay in transfer movement. Ron Gourlay said in a press conference yesterday that two signings will be completed in the next eight to ten days.
Who he meant I have no idea but I'd imagine the tabloids will let us know soon enough. Since Zamparini is busy whoring Pastore out to anyone who'd listen he may be one.

Palermo's VP has said that Pastore is close to Chelsea move.

CFC officially signed Oriol Romeu on a four year contract after paying a €5m fee.

The deal includes a buy-back clause of €10m after a year, rising to €15m after the second year.

So you need him to look average for two seasons and then become a world beater :)

Any progress on that front antihenry?

By two new signings he probably meant the young keeper Thibaut Courtois from Genk, that was bought and immediately loaned out to Atletico Madrid, and now Romeu.

Fans obviously expected more established names when he made that remark, but there's still time.

Might only be short term though as Barcelona can buy him back at the end of the season for £3.5 million I believe. Thats if they could convince him that he'd get a game.

He's a better and more mobile version of Mikel. Good transfer by Chelsea.

AVB cleared that up yesterday on the official website...

VILLAS-BOAS: OUR ORIOL | Latest Chelsea News | Team & Transfer News | Chelsea FC | Chelsea

Andre Villas-Boas has addressed a couple of incorrect media stories that have been circulating, including the details of an agreement with Barcelona regarding Oriol Romeu.

The 20-year-old summer signing has been the most regular selection for the anchor midfield role in the past month. His raised profile in England has led to a repetition of previous stories suggesting his former club have an option to take the player back should they so wish. In reality, all the Catalan club have is a first-refusal agreement should Chelsea deem Romeu surplus to our requirements.

'The buy-back option states that Barcelona can only buy back if Chelsea are willing to sell,' clarified Villas-Boas, who also discussed Romeu's quick acclimatisation to England.

There's bound to be loads of players at Barca not quite good enough to break into their first team but who wold be fantastic for other clubs.

Barca are fully aware of this as well. They seem to be very reluctant to do transfers if there's no buy-back clause involved.

Think there's probably more to that Barca deal than Villas-Boas says, don't see why there would be the fixed transfer fees otherwise.

How is that a buy back clause? Barcelona can get him if Chelsea want to sell? Isn't that the same as every transfer? I'm confused.

i think it means that if they buy him they have first option and have also included a value. so if chelsea accepted a 10m bid from united barca have to be notified that he's for sale, in which case they have to meet their clause of 3.5 million only

You'd expect so having been schooled at the Camp Nou with all those other young players who battered BATE 4-0 in the final Barcelona CL group stage game.

Definite an upgrade on Mikel but I think he's getting a lot more credit than his performances have merited. Probably because he's young, Spanish and ex-Barcelona.

As some of you have said, a more mobile version of Mikel. Doing well for his first season. Doing a lot of selfless work in that Chelsea-midfield.
