I've been having a bit of trouble online, mostly FIFA, in which I seem to be getting problems others have not, my game taking ages to let me select a team, while when others do it it is almost instantaneous. Anyway i posted this problem on a FIFA site and someone replied 'Open Ports'.

How do I do this? Where from?

I have an iMac computer with a very fast connection, the PS3 shows the signal strength at 100% and it is getting the signal wirelessly and directly from my router.

Can anyone help?

My router is an AppleExtreme and my modem is a Scientific Atlanta 2100

I tried some site that Ivor showed me but it seems quite dated and didn't have fifa08 on it.

I also have 7 other computers in the house using the connection as my dad works from home and we have all sorts of laptops and such around, all of which are Macs.

I currently have WEP security on it and don't really want to take it off. Not sure what to do.

What does the PS3 internet connection test say?

Obtain IP Address - Succeeded
Internet Connection - Succeeded
PLAYSTATION Network - Succeeded
UPnP - Not Available
NAT Type - Type 2

Also:

A) Are you comfortable giving the PS3 a static IP address?

B) Does your model of the router support a DMZ?

You do not need to turn WEP off, although we can add a little to that.

A) I don't see why not, what would be bad about that?

B) I have no idea, how would I find that out?

Here is my router through a web browser. You can see that UPnP is off.

Mine is like that for a reason, however, maybe you should try turning yours on to see what happens before we do anything else.

Cheers Weaste but I managed to fix it.

I found a setting called 'Port Mapping' which gave me some options to fill in, then I found out what the port numbers for FIFA 08 were (3659, 6000, 9570) and added those and asked it to allow them.

It now works every time, thanks for your help.

Good, glad that solved your problem. If anyone else has a problem in future, the ports you need to forward are listed in the PS3 manual under Internet Connection Test. At the moment these are:

The port numbers for PLAYSTATION®Network servers used for this are TCP: 80, 443, 5223 and UDP: 3478, 3479.

For voice / video chat and online game play, direct communication with other PS3™ systems is used for data transmission during voice / video chat and online gaming. The port number used for this is UDP: 3658. However, you may need to use a different port number when you are connected using a NAT router.

Although certain games may use their own port numbers (Metal Gear Online for example). If your router is UPnP enabled, then you should turn it on.

When you are using a router, direct communication with other PS3™ systems may be restricted depending on the type of routers and its settings. When using a UPnP-compatible router, enable the UPnP feature.

If you are having problems being dropped by the PSN, it is likely that the UPnP feature and the PS3 are conflicting. In this case, turn it off and manually port forward the standard ports, and any a particular game may not need. You can open all ports to the PS3 by placing it inside the DMZ.
