Only by the night - kings of leon

2008 called.

I'm sure there's a Kings Of Leon thread anyway.

Shit album, not helped by the overplaying of Sex on Fire and Use Somebody which I find to be poor songs, especially compared to some of the stuff of their previous three albums.

I never listened to the Kings of Leon before they went all mainstream, so I thought Only By the night was bloody good. But from what I've heard their "fans" who has listened to them much longer then me etc. thinks its one of their worst albums out there.

Best album they've done. All their old non mainstream stuff was shite.

SSShhhh, thats what i thought when my friend played some of it to me during our 6 hour drive up somewhere.

But i dont/didnt want to offend the "fans". I thought Only be the Night was brilliant aswell.
Sick and tireed of it myself, everyone going on how they sold out and just do pop songs now where before they were original. No they were shit and they did shit songs. Getting a corperate producer helped them out no end.

Lol, you are setting yourself up for a lashing Sir!!! :D

I tend to agree with you though.

I'm a huge fan and one of those that prefers the earlier stuff, I heard "wasted time" in about 2004 and loved it so got the first album followed by the second. I also got into their cousins band Red Light Knights and got to know them on Myspace and still have them on Facebook now.

The new albums coming out in about 6 weeks and I've heard a few clips and it's sounding awesome. It's got the production of OBTN but with more of the blues and soul that endeared me to thier first two albums.

Music fans that like bands right up until they become popular are losers and get off on the fact they they liked them first and making sure all of their "new" fans know it.

It's almost as though they dislike it because it's popular and they like to be seen as the one that's different and likes all these unheard of bands.

It's usually students aswell that look like they need a good scrub.

Cheers for that. Was wondering when they releasing something new. Do you know what its called?

This. I agree with that in a way. You get people who would genuinely like their first "underground" music - but people saying OBTN was "crap" and they're sellouts etc. would be the ones you are describing.

OBTN was in no way crap, it was better than 99% of other albums out there but the first two were just so different.

Off the top of my head I think it's called Come Around Sundown. I'm on my phone though so try google.

Listen out for Radioactive and Mary. Radioactive is a real lyric fest an Mary is a really swinging bluesy number that reminds me of the beetles "oh darling"

I hate people who do the whole 'mainstream' is rubbish thing, but I think this album, while still very good, was nowhere near their best. I do prefer their older stuff, it was in no way 'shite', neither is the stuff from OBTN.

Although I'm not a fan of any of the Kings of Leon stuff, it has to be said that bands do seem to get more popular the more "normal" and commercial sounding thier music gets and the fans that likes their previous material for it's distinctively non-commercial sound are likely to be turned off when bands go for a more radio-friendly sound.

There's nothing more irritating as a sign of a band going over the popularity threshold than when you see them playing in a massive venue (after previously watching them in small halls and bars) where you are miles away from the stage and during all the old songs you like all you can hear are 1000s of new fans saying "What's this song, I haven't heard this before - is it new" while taking blurry little photos on their mobiles wating for the big hit to come on where they whoop and sing badly at the top of their lungs. It's infuriating, but like I say, I thought they were shite in 2002, and I think they're shite now...
