I was reading in the new PLAYSTATION official magazine about a display thats brighter and crisper than either Plasma or LCD and only 3mm thick!
They were talking about Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED).
OLED is set to debut in HDTV's by the end of the year.
By all accounts OLED uses thin layers of organic compound to produce light. And as they don't require a back light the display can be less than 5mm thick.
OLED panels can be printed onto flexible surfaces allowing for TV screens to be just rolled up when not in use.
What is interesting is the technical specs.
An OLED Display is incredibly bright and detailed and has a far quicker response time to current flat panel technology allowing for a crisper reproduction of fast moving action.
An LCD has a contrast ratio of between 500:1 to 10,000:1.
OLED displays meanwhile, claim to have a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1!
At the moment the OLED Technology is very expensive (An 11" model would set you back about £400).
But is this the future of Television?
Rumours are already circulating that sony's next handheld (PSP2) will use the technology, so theoretically you could fold it up and put it in your back pocket!
