folks,
Ive got an old school Ipod, b&w interface etc, weighs a ton etc.
I need to upgrade to a new mp3 player.
Any recommendations or will i just go for the latest ipod?

btw i use it on the bus etc so watching an aul movie etc would be pretty sweet too

depends. Do you use playlists, or do you like having your complete music collection on a device and then choose random songs?

If you use playlists, get an Ipod touch. The screen is awesome, and videos are far better to watch on it. It also has far more functions such as internet browsing, but it does lack in memory (this due to the HD being a flash drive).

If you like to carry your complete music collection, then go for one of the Ipod classics, either 80gb or 160gb.

Dont go for an iPod, overpriced and overrated.

I did some research, tried out a few MP3s in shops and finally broke the mould and went for this:

ttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NWZA818-Video-Walkman-Battery/dp/B000VD2130/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1210377299&sr=8-1

Its a Sony Walkman MP4 player.

Fantastic little gadget:
-Very small, very light and very thin (weighs as much as a nano) and easily gets lost in your pocket :)
-BRILLIANT sound quality (the default headphones are worth £40 alone)
-Great colour screen for watching videos.
-Brilliant value for money.
-No need for software! you can do a simple 'drag and drop' to transfer your music, pictures and videos. If you like your playlists then just use Windows media player and sort out our library as you would with iTunes.
-35 hours of battery life....you barely need to charge the thing.

I would seriously recommend it, picked mine up a few months ago and I havent looked back since. You've got to see and try the thing out in person to really appreciate it though.

p.s: The model ive shown you is an 8gb model, of course there are 2gb, 4gb and 16gb (with bluetooth headphones :) ) variants.

And videos of an alternative format are automatically converted into the correct format are they?

Other mp4 players just don't have the software.

Comes with converting software, or you could alternatively download it online. Problem solved.

Orite fair enough.
and where does one buy legal content for it?
The iTunes store has the widest catalogue of online music.
I really am a massive fan of iTunes.
What are peoples problems with it?

Windows media also has a legal shopping service, with a huge library of songs. If not there them there are many websites where one could purchase songs.

I mean hell, you could even use iTunes if you wanted to, buy the song of your choice and then convert it into a playable format via the software to save on your Sony Walkman.

I think the iTunes purchased songs have format locking software on, and can only be transferred onto ipods.

Cd's, mate your living in the 90's.

i've got an ipod nano and it's well what you would expect from an mp3 player. Can customise it with skins, good value for money, light, can listen to songs, podcasts, watch movies, tv shows and apparently you can eve rent films from itunes. Only problem is the screen is a bit small so i imagine it wouldnt be very nice watching a movie on there.

Currently you can only buy/rent movies in the US. Should be coming to the UK soon though.
