Down in Deptford market yesterday, sifting through boxloads of old books. I found one called Gentlemen and Players by Michael Marshall. I've a colleague who's nuts about cricket, so thought I'd buy it as a gift. He's off work this week, so brought it home. Glanced at it this morning and discovered it's not only a first edition, it's signed by Ted Dexter and Fred Trueman, as well as the author.......with a covering card stating that the book was signed for auction.

I'm not a cricket fan, but I imagine it's worth a lot more than the quid I paid for it. It's in excellent nick.

Howzat! ;)

How much do you reckon, Slabber?

I found out that an unsigned first edition is selling on Biblio.com for £15.

Haven't a clue how much Dexter and Trueman's signature would add to the value. Not that it's for sale. He's a good mate, as well as a colleague and he'll be made up with it.

Wait for a few years.

Let English cricket die its natural death.

Then put it up on eBay.I'd imagine it to be a lot more valuable then.

Ok being silly...actually I doubt Dexter or Trueman's signature would fetch too much but a first edition, and a signed one, would be a good double amount of the unsigned one.Not big money, but reasonable.

Or just wait...

It all depends how many of these are floating about, I suggest you keep hold of the book Chaz - Ted Dexter and Fred Trueman are household names in Cricket.

These items get best prices at specialist cricket memorabilia auctions.

It won't be worth more than £30................they're both still alive and must've signed loads, though verification does make it more valuable.

Any of you lot have any cricket memorabilia?

My brother was given a bat signed by the great W G Grace by an elderly neighbour...he gave it to a charity auction.

Never found out how much it fetched...

This one might be a one off, Sults.

It was signed at a dinner after a Gentleman v Players match, which clearly states on the card ' a book signed by the author, Fred Trueman and Ted Dexter will be auctioned for charity.'

Hardly something to give up the job for, but a nice little find.

I couldn't tell you the first thing about Trueman or Dexter btw, except that they were cricketers ;)

I am surprised, I would have bet on a lot more being fetched - W G Grace is aknowledged as the greatest player of all time.

No, I do enough for charity and so does my mate.

He's getting it...........I doubt he'd sell it for five hundred pounds, even tho he's not wealthy. Not that sort of bloke.

Might've fetched much more............I didn't check on the closing bidding.

But autographs are notoriously dodgy, unless authenticated.

Great gesture by your bro ;)
