Nedved is Ferguson's big target

Sir Alex Ferguson's efforts to re-establish Manchester United as equals of Real Madrid will focus on luring Pavel Nedved from Juventus. The Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson is also a target for the Old Trafford manager in what promises to be a summer of extensive recruitment.
With speculation linking David Beckham with a £30m move to Real Madrid increasing, next season's United team could have a strikingly different look.

Mino Raiola, Nedved's agent, has received two phone calls in the last month from a senior United official, believed to be the chief executive Peter Kenyon. Raiola told United that his client is settled in Turin but, citing the examples of Zinedine Zidane and Roberto Baggio, is also aware that the chief executive Antonio Giraudo and the general manager Luciano Moggi have made it clear any player is available if the money is right.

Nedved's representatives believe a deal can be struck if United offer close to the £26m Juventus paid Lazio for the Czech midfielder two summers ago. Raiola says Barcelona have also expressed interest. Ferguson tried to sign Nedved two years ago but the board were not prepared to meet Lazio's valuation and it was Juan Sebastian Veron who moved from the same club to Old Trafford. United's board would still be reluctant to pay over £20m for a player who will be 31 in August, but the income from any Beckham sale might ease the deal.

Ferguson will be disappointed if the inquiries come to nothing. After United had beaten Juventus at Old Trafford in February, he enthused about Nedved's display, pointing out how Marcello Lippi repeatedly summoned the Czech to pass on instructions. "He's the main man of that team," said Ferguson.

One option that would appeal to Juventus is for Ryan Giggs to be offered as bait. Ferguson is also confident of signing Damien Duff from Blackburn and Nedved's ability to play either on the left wing or just behind the attack would cover the loss of Giggs, whose reputation in Italy does not seem to have been harmed by his erratic form this season.

Negotiating with Leeds for Robinson should be more straightforward. After Rio Ferdinand's controversial trans-Pennine switch, the directors at Elland Road know the animosity it will cause among their fans. But this is a small consideration given that the club's £80m debts make it imperative they sell at least two high-profile players this summer.

Ferguson's reservations about Fabien Barthez's form were compounded by the Frenchman's poor display against Real Madrid on Wednesday, although United had already made their interest in Robinson known to the player's advisers. They believe he should be available for about £8m. Ferguson should also be encouraged by the disclosure that Robinson grew up as a United fan, something he has tried to keep a secret from Leeds supporters.

Robinson, viewed as David Seaman's long-term England successor, has been hawked around a number of other clubs, most notably Arsenal. However, Arsène Wenger seems more interested in Rustu Recber, Fenerbahce's Turkey international, available on a free transfer this summer.

Ferguson was planning a hectic summer of transfer activity even before Real emphasised how much United must improve if the manager is to recapture the European Cup.

Robinson looks like being the first arrival, a move that is almost certain to precipitate Barthez's departure, and it is not impossible Harry Kewell will follow him from Leeds if Ferguson cannot get Duff.

Ronaldinho's name keeps being brought up but the 23-year-old Brazilian, under contract to Paris St-Germain until 2006, would prefer a move to Italy. And PSG have had no contact from Old Trafford.

One certainty is that Ferguson also wants another centre-half to cover Laurent Blanc's retirement and he has spoken at length with Nottingham Forest's manager Paul Hart about the England Under-21 defender Michael Dawson, also coveted by Liverpool.

If Forest fail to win promotion they would be under pressure to sell and, even if they do go up, it is questionable whether a club of their resources could reject a £8m offer. One suggestion was that Dawson could go to Old Trafford and then be loaned back for a season, but Ferguson now seems to have cooled on that idea.

How many feckin players is that???

About 10 in the last 24 hours. I've seen Rustu, Robinson, Nedved, Dawson, Kewell, Duff, Quaresma, Kluivert... Probably forgot a couple as well!

So we won't pay over 20m for a player who'll soon be 31? What a joke. We won't even pay 10. That link is bull.

I thought that as well.

Scousers on YAWN claiming we've got a done deal for Kewell at £6m. Hope so.

£6 million for kewell minus the money they owe us for the great Ferdinand swindle I hope.

I know the transfer market is not what it used to be, but Kewell for 6 mil when we bought Rio for 30+???

Leeds are screwed MR. I don't think they're really in a position to bargain if noone else wants him.

Kewell for 6mil ?? I doubt that is a serious offer.

Nedved for ? don't thnk we would pay the money Juve would demand for a 31yo, even though Fergie is a confirmed admirer.

Dawson on the right.

We probably will get a CB because Larry Blanc's going, not sure we want to spend 8mil, but Dawson is considered a classy player and a cert for England, we could use a big asskicker(6'5"), and a goal threat- 6 for Forest this season, the last one a 30yr drive, so he might be a pretty good investment, if only to thwart the dippers :D , and Danny Webber was rumoured to be part of this proposed deal. Anyway on Forest forums they rekon he will probably go to United- but not if they gain promotion(though they're currently not in position for the playoffs).

That's interesting about Robinson growing up as a United fan. I never knew that. I thought he was so impressive for Leeds in their Champions League matches a few years back. For a young goal keeper he's always seemed to have so much poise and composure. £8 million sounds really high to me though given Leeds' financial situation. And didn't we buy Fabien for around £7 million when the transfer fees were a lot higher?

It looks increasingly likely that we will be raiding both Leeds and West Ham. I doubt it will be good enough to build a team that can beat Real Madrid though. And before the pedants jump on me I mean over 2 legs.

Nedved would be the ultimate signing. I have heard however that he intends to return to the Czech Republic after Juve. Don't know if this is true or not though.

At the same time, we can't just go out and buy Another Figo, Zidane and Ronaldo. There aren't any! We should do our thing and create the best team possible. And if thats not enough well...

If we're going to be damned, let's be damned for what we really are!

I remembered that he mentioned something about never leaving serie A but that was a couple of years ago.

I have to question these Kewell for 6m rumours. Kewell's availability would definitely spark a bidding war between several clubs which would push his asking price up.

Nedved is one of few players that would improve us so he would be a great signing.

Duff: pass
Dawson: NFI, never seen him.
Rustu: no thanks
Kluivert: i wouldnt mind but he turned us down b4 so im not much impressed with his commitment to the club.
Figo: no thanks
Ronaldinho: good player but not for us IMO
Cisse: certain hit

What are you on? He's one of the absolut best midfielders in the world, would easily walk into United's midfield.

But, his asking price is way too high as he's 30.

ditto. cant see both leaving. Giggsy has responded well in my book. far different attitude to becks. he got a kick up the arse mid season and his new baby, the diff with giggs and becks i hope is that giggsy is as committed as ever to staying for life, not peering over the garden fence at the distant pretty rainbow <img src="graemlins/angel.gif" border="0" alt="[Angel]" />

Plus Giggsy is an manc which I'm sure makes a difference. Even though Becks is a lifelong supported he a Landaner and spends his time commuting which I'm sure pisses SAF off.

On another note, do you really think Duff is that great? Even cisse? I don't think they are Man Utd material.

I don't think Duff is better than Giggs, but he would give good cover, and has a great heart.

Cisse is certainly United material, but an unfinished talent; physically he's a force of nature, and has the natural ability to be among the elite strikers in the world. Faster than Henry, as strong as Ruud, a harder shot I've not seen, yet has a fine touch too. But maybe because he's so superior athleticaly he's overlooked work on his finishing, not that its weak, but he's not clinical enough, though as that comes to him- he will be unstoppable.
