Here you go Murt. You bleat on and on about 8 or 9 of the Oirish team being good enough for United and leave us to talk about 8 or 9 Brazilians who are all definitely on their way to United.

Are you sure? I think we could sell 8 or 9 of our lot and bring in 8 or 9 Oirish and we'd have a right happy team of favourites.

Not convinced at all by Carr, Finnan or Keane. Given maybe, Duff as a squad player yeah - he had a good world cup and as far as I know a decent prem season but I can't remember him really looking the bollox last year.

Keane aside, none of the above would land a starting job imo. Duff is obviously fantastic, but he couldn't displace Giggs who is arguably the best in the world at his position. Given is good, but probably couldn't displace the clown. Carr, despite tremendous potential, has yet to prove that he's not an injury liability. Finnan might have a shot, but thats debatable too.

In short, they're all good players but (Duff and Keano aside), they would probably not see much playing time at United, unless they were patient enough to wait.

Did you edit that or did I not read it properly? Obviously Keane is. I thought you meant the other one, why do we need to talk about Roy in this thread?

If Barthez was to go Given would be an excellent replacement.
Carr if fit which i doubt he ever will push hard for a full back position and possibly make it his own.
Finnan i believe would walk into the team and not be moved by anyone.
Giggs is unreplaceable so Duff cant be expected to do that. Id reckon as a squad player he'd be good enough for maybe 30 games/ season. Remember he can play in several positions.
Robbie Keane would be adequate as one of our 4 strikers and see where he goes from there.

So thats 6 Irishmen who technically speaking could come into the Man utd squad and add to it,,, imo.

I think we should buy Duff and Finnan if given the chance, as I think they have the potential to start at United for the better part of the next decade or so. They would probably have to be content with being squad players for a year or two, which would seem unlikely given that they're currently both starting in the Premiership.

That would be the old dyslexia again dans ;)
Keane i one of several Irishmen good enough for our squad, so hes relevant.

My opinion too, they are players who are relatively available and we need.
Given & Carr are not needed/unavailable & riskable (due to health) to health.

So if we sign them too we could have a Man utd team with 4 Irish men next season, wont that be great Hans?

The only 2 men out of that lot who could realistically end up at OT are Finnan and Duff. Finnan because hes a handy fullback & we're a bit short in that area.
Duff because hes a world class talent waiting to happen. And not necessarily as Giggs replacement.

shouldnt waste money on Given though, Roy Carroll has every bit the potential to be better than Given once he gets his chance.

Finnan is not Utd quality - he was very average in the WC and Puyol and Coly eg are streets ahead of him.

No more of an expert than you are <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

And no less either, becuase you're good enough, smart enough, and doggone It, people like you.

Puyol is an interesting defender, and can play both CB and RB. He is not worth the money Barça will want for him though, but neither is Rio Ferdinand worth the money Leeds want. We should have bought him 3/4 years ago for peanuts! :(

Finnan and Duff are IMO, definately in the class United want. But I think a lot of you underestimate Shay Given. He had a wonderful tournament, didn't make any mistakes and kept Ireland in matches at very important times. Because he was overshadowed by Khan, Marcos, Rustu, who all had exceptional tournaments, let it not detract from the quality of this man.

Given was voted in the premiership team along with Finan (no need to mention Roy) so how could they not be good enough for Utd if our own players in that position aren't good enough?

Well, you agree with the voting for all positions then I assume?

roy keane by the way hasnt FULLY retired yet from intl football. Id say he play on through Euro 2004 especially that muppets kelly, staunton and quinn have finally hung up their cob-webs, mullets and walking sticks in that order.

Given was voted best GK last season- and was a big factor in Newcastles' success. He could be a little louder personality wise- just an opinion. Bottom line- he makes very few mistakes and makes saves most keepers couldn't.

Finnan reminds me of Irwin, nothing spectacular, a Mister Reliable- wouldn't say no to that.

Carr injuries aside, is the best RB in the PL IMO. Has the agression and tackling defensively, with the skill and drive to get forward. Still he is not so far ahead of Gaz to be able to bump him out.

Duff has the technical ability and graft to slot right in. I agree he could not oust Giggs, but with his versatility and the amount of games United play, he would see plenty of action.

we missed our chance- Birmingham have signed Aliou Cisse.
Just watch him play next season.
Brucie listened to me even if you lot didn't!

I dont agree with all the votes for the Prem team but I cant argue with Given being ahead of Barthez on last seasons form or Finan being ahead of Gaz, especially after his very dodgy early season form. Once Gaz worked out how to play offside his form improved and I was actaully quite impressed, he changed my opinion of him.
