Official: Real Madrid to sign Espanyol's Jose Maria Callejon - Goal.com

Callejon will return to the Bernabeu in the summer after three years in Barcelona, in the club's third signing for the new season

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Espanyol forward Jose Maria Callejon, who will arrive in the Spanish capital for the 2011-12 season to rejoin the club he started his career with as a teenager.

A note on Madrid's official website confirmed the transfer, which will go through for an undisclosed fee.

"Real Madrid and Espanyol have come to an agreement over the transfer of Jose Maria Callejon, who will be linked to the club for the next five seasons," the statement revealed on Monday afternoon.

Callejon is a product of the Merengues youth ranks and made his debut for the club's B team in 2007, scoring 21 goals in 40 appearances.

He could not break into the first team, however, and along with twin brother Juanmi - who moved to Real Mallorca - left in 2008. The attacker has played 88 La Liga games for Espanyol, scoring 10 goals.

Callejon is the third new arrival at the Bernabeu following the signings of Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop.

Haven't heard of him... What's his deal?

And why the hell did Madrid buy Altintop?

Another notch in their home grown belt for Europe. Probably have had a buy back clause on him like with Granero and got him on the cheap after having a very good season. With him they know have 5 home grown players in the first team so in that sense that buy made sense.

Madrid's got something like 50 of its ex-youth team players in La Liga 1 and 2 - they're not bad at producing players, just at incorporating them. Every now and again they go and get one back from a buyback or loan deal, like Granero. Sometimes they wait and buy them back after the buyback period is over - like Arbeloa and Callejon.

Callejon's appeal is that he's flexible - it also probably means that Leon's gone (as expected).

Altintop's an oddity. I think he's been bought purely because he's older and they've got a young team. Plus he'll be content to be a benchwarmer.

Fancy calling a lad Maria!
Reminds me of my Auntie Maria, bet he drinks far too much Bacardi and calls his husband a useless twat at Christenings and weddings just like her...
