Let's face it, football has always been about keeping possession and scoring more goals than the opposition. If you have it (the ball) they can't score.
With the abundance of talent we have in midfield we can (and often do) keep the ball for long spells which frustrates the other team and gives us the chance to create an opening. OK, so we've struggled a bit in that area lately but we haven't lost either . . . & in truth, haven't really looked like losing either!
The bonus is that our midfield are all goal-scorers in their own right. Even Nicky puts a few away given the chance.
The five midfield system allows the players to move around, effectively preventing the man-to-man marking tactic employed by teams looking to avoid defeat. (as opposed to trying to win) It's attractive to watch (at least for us) especially when you know we're likely to score at any minute.
Scholes, for example is starting to look more comfortable in this rotating plan despite his injury & I thought it has been interesting to watch Keane get as many scoring chances as he has this season. Giggs has scored a couple of great goals & came oh-so-close to another against Boro the other night. Becks also has scored a cracker from open play. You know Scholes will bury a few before long too!
Even when AF does play Ole & Ruud together, Ole seems to be playing in-the-hole (or off to the right or left) so don't expect any changes. Let the team continue to get comfortable with the system and pray the lads start taking their chances a little more often.
Keep the faith,
