Christ - who are buying these PS2's.

And the PS3's are crying out for a drop in price - if they reduce the price by like £50 maybe they will sell 10/15% more? Less profit on the unit, but potentially more can be generated from game sales.

Dont really follow these console wars, but if I were a parent with a couple of kids, given the option of buying 2 xbox's (1 each) or a PS3 to share - seems like a no brainer to go for xbox.

This surprised me.

Weaste do you know when sony plan to stop releasing software for the ps2?

They are not doing any top of the range games anymore themselves, but they still release some - Singstar, Buzz, etc. I think around 130 titles were released on PS2 in 2008, and there will be around 100 for 2009.

Our CEO, Jack Tretton, likes to say that "the only way to kill the PS2 is to stop supporting it." So the PS2 will be fully supported; we had 130 PS2 games in 2008, and we're looking at 100+ for 2009. The PS2 is still a very strong console.

They can't really drop the price, they are already suffering from a year on year drop in revenue between 40% and 20% depending on the market due to the strength of the Yen.

It's not only Sony who are taking a hit. Our store is losing around $120-$130 on every PS3 80gb we sell.

$618AUD with either LBP, R2, Singstar Abba or the new Motorstorm. 360 Arcade is $238

I suppose that Microsoft source everything in US dollars, so they are not taking the same hit. The machine is cheaper in any case as it doesn't have HDD, Wireless, BD Drive, etc. I doubt that the internal electronics components are that much more expensive in PS3 than they are in the XB360. Microsoft are also getting terrific software sales, so it's not quite known how much they are offsetting a possible loss on the hardware through that.

because its shite and its a rip off

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy (which I'm not) I don't think it is shite or a rip off.
In my opinion Nintendo realised they couldn't compete with Sony and Microsoft and didn't want to get into a technology war so they chose a different avenue and it's proved very popular. There are some very good games for it and a lot of crap ones, but this could be said for any system.

As for it being a rip off, on release it was the cheapest console and despite price cuts from Xbox and Ps3 it is still competitive price wise and outselling its rivals. It didn't make great leaps graphically but with the motion controls it changed the way people look at gaming. People that looked at Xbox/Playstation contollers and were put off by all the buttons have got into gaming because of the Wii's simplistic control scheme. It has also changed the perception of gamers. Gaming is more socially acceptable now instead of being percieved as the passtime of Geeks with no social skills and spotty teenagers.

This can only be good for gaming in general as this generations Wii owners might opt for a more "hardcore" console next time. Alternatively Nintendo might make enough money from the Wii to offer a true next generation console next time which gives more choice for everybody.

I'd like to see the PC sales for L4D, including Steam sales. Surprised to see it doing so well with the 360, but then I guess that is Valves 'other market" now. Too bad Valve don't release their Steam sales. Then again, they did say retail sales were actually still a big part of their total sales, so if anyone can get the PC retail sales for L4D we might have an idea.

All I know about the L4D sales is that L4D pre-orders exceeded the pre-orders from Team Fortress 2 by 160%.

For what it actually is in terms of the box itself, it's way overpriced. It's a GameCube!

I know it's based on old technology, I thought it was as powerfull as 2 gamecubes but I could be misinformed.

I can see your point about it being overpriced as its core technology is old but when compared to the unreliable (in terms of RROD on the Xbox) or plain expensive Ps3 (especially on initial release) I personally don't think it is a rip off although it is expensive. Most consumers will look at the price of the Wii, look at the price of the competition and base their opinion of value for money on that.

Perhaps if Sony and Microsoft had taken a similarly cautious approach and not increased the technology so rapidly then they could still have the majority of the market share and could possibly have made a profit instead of a loss on their console sales.
