The idea for the thread is very simple. There are people from all over the world on the caf. Yet we rarely ever discuss music that’s not written in English. So this thread is supposed to give everyone here the chance to share some music in their native language.
It would be cool if people took the time to provide a little background information to the songs they post. What makes them special to you and why should people from other countries try it out?
 


I’ll make the start. The title translates to „good night, friends“ and it is a song by German songwriter Reinhard Mey. He’s mostly unknown outside of Germany, but enjoys some following in the Netherlands and France. Within Germany, he was very popular in the 80s and 90s.
The song is a way to say thank you to one’s friends, for the years of friendship enjoyed together, the hospitality enjoyed by one’s friends and a way to convey appreciation for time spend together.
It is both very positive and beautiful, often played in pubs and bars, especially shortly before closing time, and very sad and melancholic, often used as a funeral song. It can be seen as both a celebration and a last goodbye.
I chose it because usually, when people outside of Germany hear our music, it is mostly techno or avantgardistic stuff. But even we enjoy a good cry every now and then. So if you ever wanted a good, Germany song to cry to, this is the song to do it with.
 
This is a song by the seminal Moldovan Eurodance outfit O-Zone. It is from the perspective of the revolutionary Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and details heartbreak and memories of a stolen moment beneath a linden tree.

The breakbeat scene in Andalucia is amazing, loads of free parties and organised events. Always fantastic, a bit like being transported back to the 90's.


 


Apart from them being from the Ivory Coast, I don't know anything about the group. It was a pretty popular song on the continent back in day. Turns out the guy was singing about relationship problems and everyone was just dancing along :lol:

I like them too, but my ex was obsessed, to the level where she got the autograph of the singer all over her underarm, and chose to tattoo it.
I kinda lost interest in them because of her, buuuut the music is good, and i don't think it should matter to many that they sing in Norwegian, many Noggies don't understand all they're singing either :lol:
 
I don't know if anyone knows La Compagnie Créole here, but they make a kind of party music with Caribbean rhythms, sung in French and Creole, most active in the 80s. For some reason, they were very popular in Quebec. Recently I was at an event where they played a punk version by Capitaine Révolte of one of their biggest hits, which I then looked up and made me listen to the original again as well. It's good music, and a lot of fun.

At least part of this song was used by a famous Dutch radio show that played before midnight. I have never actually listened to if and I don't have more context - but this line 'Was ich noch zu sagen hätte, dauert eine Zigarette' reminded me of reading about this. :)

This has a maybe somewhat similar vibe. It's about being an older couple, together and calm, secure and safe in each other. Quite beautiful.

Man Utd Chao is fun, although it's not really music to listen to in isolation. It's really something to get in the mood - at least for me. This might be my favorite track of his:



Pretty on-point lyrics in Clandestino there. It reminds me of Ska-P thematically, who I wanted wanted to mention here. Mestizaje is brilliant for example, both textually and musically:

 
I'm going to post a couple of relatively recent albums from relatively underground Spanish bands. There's plenty of good rock/metal/punk in Spanish/Basque/Catalan, not everything is urban/latin sounds.

Ella La Rabia - Cación de cuna oceánica (2022): post hardcore / alternative rock with a pinch of Canarian folklore




Bourbon (untitled, 2024): hard rock / progressive rock / alternative rock from Andalucía, my second favourite album from last year




Lisabö - Lorategi izoztuan hezur huts bilakatu arte (2023): post hardcore in Basque (not on Spotify atm)

We have very good music coming out of Belgium, although most of it is actually in English. These are some of my favorite Belgian in Dutch/French songs, old and new:

Fun hip hop but with actual great beats.





Absolute classic.





One of my favorite lyrics in Dutch: "Nobody has ever said No to me in a more beautiful way".



And what's probably the favorite Belgian song for most of my countrymen, it's on top of 'best of' list all the time. It's such a melancholic song, it hits really deep.



Bit of punk included.
