The first iPhone shipped in 2007, and we still don't have a product that is close to their experience. Android came on the scene just over 2 years ago, and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes. Unbelievable."

* "...there is intense heat coming from our competitors, more rapidly than we ever expected. Apple disrupted the market by redefining the smartphone and attracting developers to a closed, but very powerful ecosystem."
* "They changed the game, and today, Apple owns the high-end range."
* "Google has become a gravitational force, drawing much of the industry's innovation to its core."
* "We have some brilliant sources of innovation inside Nokia, but we are not bringing it to market fast enough. We thought MeeGo would be a platform for winning high-end smartphones. However, at this rate, by the end of 2011, we might have only one MeeGo product in the market."
* "...Symbian is proving to be an increasingly difficult environment in which to develop to meet the continuously expanding consumer requirements..."
* "Our competitors aren't taking our market share with devices; they are taking our market share with an entire ecosystem."
* "We poured gasoline on our own burning platform. I believe we have lacked accountability and leadership to align and direct the company through these disruptive times. We had a series of misses. We haven't been delivering innovation fast enough. We're not collaborating internally. Nokia, our platform is burning."

Read the full article, initially they aren't sure of its authenticity, but they give an update, stating this is infact internal Nokia Communique.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop rallies troops in brutally honest 'burning platform' memo? (update: it's real!) -- Engadget

The memo in full(starts halfway down the article) really is good...A call to arms of sorts.

Serve them right, the twat, they have been milking the customer for so long with their shit phone on a brand new casing and charging people like a fortune for it.

I for once were quite happy they are where they are now.

Nokia's slipping big time. However if they can start using Android they'd be right on top again.

I'd prefer a N8 with Android than any HTC/Samsung with Android. The HTC Sense would be missed ofcourse but there are ways to get that anyway so it's not an issue.

Symbian is just absolute garbage as a user. The limited number of apps and games is just unbelievably frustrating

Unless they created something new and breakthru in technology I doubt Iphone alone will be beaten by their lame candy bar, no matter how dependable they are, we're at the 21st century where phones are cheap enough not to need to have durability of a war time radio

Nokia have been surviving on prestige of using a brand new model Nokia for so long, I bought them because there's not many competitors at that time (Ericson was worse, Samsung and LG only entered later, Ericson is too plain), now that there's Iphone and Blackberry, say good F'in bye to Nokia

I disagree. IF Nokia shift to Android their going to once again start to dominate imo. Their phones are very reasonable, especially in the mid level range and if they do get Android it'll be massive for them. Shame that last year they said they'll "never" use Android which is a shame because I doubt MeeGo is going to take on the Apple OS and Android.

It's the law of number one, he who invented it the first usually gains barrier of entry, at least for a few good years, it really does take Nokia something great to beat that.

In my country most of us use blackberry because of the blackberry messenger, it's very hard for Nokia, Iphone, or Android to break that monopoly, because to be fair you're going to get left out if you're not on the BBM.

I personally like iphone better, but i wouldn't wanna be left out when 99% of everyone i know are using Blackberry messenger

PS: The only thing expensive in their sets is imaginary, all they have is pretty basic GSM phone with old fashioned technology in an admitedly sleek model, but the pricing is ridiculous for a basic phone

"Do you have a Nokia charger?" used to be part of the lexicon

Then it was: "Do you have a little Nokia charger?...you know the new one, that's smaller?.....No I can't use that...No it won't fit anymore....Cos they've made it smaller...No i don't know why either...So you don't have one no?....Shit"

Now it's: "Do you have an iPhone charger?"

Nokia phones have been a bag o' shite since they first got colour screens.

This is a belter of a phone though. My first.

nokia still is a great hardware engineering company. hope they push through with a full-on partnership with microsoft and use windows phone 7 platforms on their devices. Could be a viable 3rd alternative to iOS/iphone and android.

They do have that in PDA iirc, windows based or sort, the thing is it doesn't always guarantee success, because even if the technology is there I won't be playing windows based game on a phone screen (which is too small to even read the caf properly), so it's like having a laptop with a phone screen, in the end it's not gonna be utilised fully.

we all have microsoft office in our phone, but not practical other than for emergency viewing purposes.

Anything bigger than the phone the tablet pc have already set that up.

I love how Iphone revolutionise hand phone industry with their fun gaming, there's only so much an old fashioned keypad can do, most of us have problems typing with our fat thumbs as it is

Is there a snake 3 yet?

My first 4 phones were all nokia, GOAT non-colour phones.

Nokia 3210 with a Manchester United cover. Best phone I ever had, and I had it for four or five years I think, which is pretty amazing for a tech interested teen. It even survived when I threw a hissy fit and tossed it in the wall, but the bottom line of the screen disappeared. Didn't matter though, you knew it always said "Send" or something like that!

Unfortunately, any Nokia phone I've ever used since has been at the same level, only less intuitive to use.

Nooo. Android please! The only way for Nokia to beat HTC and Apple is to get Android. Android's becoming amazingly popular and a Nokia+ Android combo would be

An N8 (USB on the go) + Android with the 12.1 MP Camera

Tbh Blackberry is a phone I would never use. I don't check mails that often and BBM is just not a good enough reason for me to buy a phone. In terms of apps and games it's even worse than Symbian

Me too, but again, when 99% of your contacts are using the blackberry messenger , you're inclined to have one. They got in first, if only iphone got in first

Well I've started using "Whatsapp" which is just like BBM except that you don't need to buy a new phone just to use it and it works across all platforms, Symbian, Android, BB, Apple. And I already have a lot of contacts who use it so it's a good thing.

I will absolutely not buy a BB even If I'm the only one in my entire contact list not to have one. I can't stand the thought of using a BB without absolutely any apps of note.

That's whats most of my friends said, somehow they're swallowing their own spit (is that the correct terms?)

Interesting to see who'll the dominant force in the next 10 - 20 years

Same here. Very handy for keeping in touch with friends in the US.

Honestly I would rather not have a phone than a BB. I was getting a Bold 2 but I absolutely rejected that...will get a Dezire HD soon

That's so universally true.

Most phones nowadays are charged by the same type of charger anyway, aren't they? Both my phones, all my parents phones and my girlfriend phone are charged by the same type, mini USB or something.

Just been reading the Nokia have teamed up with Microsoft to battle Apple. Should be interesting but I doubt it'll help much.

10:38AM Why Microsoft and not Android? Elop says they assessed three options: one was MeeGo and Symbian, the internal option. He describes that option as "concerning," because of how slow he sees it developing. They've discussed Android a lot, but there was a sense that differentiation on that platform would have been very difficult for Nokia. "The Microsoft option represented to us the best opportunity to build and join and fight" within a new ecosystem.

This is just stupid. Windows OS is well....rather rubbish imo. I anyway had no intention of buying any more Nokia's but I always had a tiny hope that maybe, just maybe one day Nokia would start using Android. But this is the end of the road for me. Symbian was bad enough, and I'm never going to use a Nokia with MS OS.

That being said this should still help Nokia somewhat. Even Windows OS >> Symbian

And dropping MeeGo has been rumored for a while as well. Good to see it confirmed but such a waste of time. Will they have any major device with a new OS other than Symbian S^3 come out anytime soon now?
