Ronaldo’s future is again in doubt as his agent “could not promise he would stay at the San Siro.”

This is the second time in less than two months that Reinaldo Pitta’s comments have prompted a bitter row with Inter directors.

In May the agent publicly demanded a wage rise for his superstar, asking that his contract be brought into line with those of teammates Christian Vieri and Alvaro Recoba.

Now that the Brazilian has netted five goals in the World Cup, Pitta has again reminded Inter that his presence at the club should not be taken for granted.

“I cannot promise that Ronaldo will stay at the San Siro,” he told a Brazilian radio station. It’s believed that how this World Cup campaign ends will decide the striker’s next move.

Ronaldo has not had a good rapport with Coach Hector Cuper and the bitter ending to the Serie A season – losing the title on the last day – further soured this situation.

This week the former World Player of the Year suffered yet another muscular injury. The relationship between the Brazilian medical staff and Inter’s club doctors has always been tense.

The Nerazzurri medics have requested further tests before he is allowed to play in the semi-final against Turkey.

However, there are few clubs that can afford to buy Ronaldo out of his contract as there are another four years left on his current deal.

Currently Il Fenomeno’s price tag is valued at around £44m, just under what Real Madrid paid for Zinedine Zidane, despite barely setting foot on a field in two years.

The only sides that could afford the Brazilian international right now would be Real, Barcelona – if Rivaldo was included as part of a swap deal – or Manchester United.

In case the situation does deteriorate, then the Nerazzurri have already pinpointed his replacement at the club.

Ronaldinho has been a target for Inter for over two years now and his fine World Cup could see him soon leave Paris Saint-Germain.

Ronaldo’s namesake is younger, cheaper and less injury prone than the 25-year-old. His arrival could be sealed with the sacrifice of Alvaro Recoba to a Spanish side
