Maybe I have missed something, but I was under a very strong impression that players such as Phil Nev, Gary Nev, Fabian and Quinton are definitely NOT surplus type players who are there just to make up the numbers in the squad!
When Gary and Phil Neville play in the team at the same time I reckon the defence is better. Both of them are class players who are also versatile and can attack when needed. Eric Harrison no less (but maybe some posters here have not heard of this remarkable man and I am not going to explain!) has called Phil a `Rolls Royce` of a player. Enough said.
Fab has slipped up this season but what goalkeeper is always perfect? It is the most stressful position in the team as everything is riding on the last defensive person and even if a team`s problems occur upfield and the goalkeeper is the unfortunate left coping with goal shots that never should have been, most people will cane the goalkeeper for letting a goal in.
Quinton would demonstrate his class at another club. His opportunities are limited so it is not easy to show what he is made of on a consistent basis. If he were to go to another Premiership team, we would know what we were missing.
And don`t forget that other players at other Premiership clubs have greater opportunities to develop a playing rhythm with their team mates and show their ability.
Why? Because while all Premiership teams rotate their squad to greater or less extents, Manchester United has a strong squad and tends to do it more than all the other teams, even Arsenal. It may keep some players fresh but it does not help the development of others.
