..............................................TEAM PHYSIO .......................................................................................... TEAM PROLIFIK ...........................................

TEAM PHYSIO

Tactics – Direct/ Mixed
Formation – 433 in possession/ 442 is the organised defensive phase
Defensive Line – Balanced
Marking – Zonal

Pretty standard 433. Best has more of a free role whereas Figo will hold the width. With Junior in the inside left position and Evra overlapping this will ensure the best Best. I really like Alberto Spencer as the striker here because not only is he a pacy dribbler but also great in the air making him an all-round threat. Edwards gets to play his full B2B game with Verratti providing smooth ball playing at DM. Carlos Alberto can play make from deep and get forward on occasion. Whilst I have no obvious ball-playing CB Vierchowod later in his career played sweeper (this is however the peak Sampdoria version) and Barzagli was pretty smooth on the ball (see video below).

Also, crazy pace from Vierchowod which will be very handy against R9.

TEAM PROLIFIK

We're lining up in a standard-looking 4-4-2, but the partnerships out wide and up front introduce an element of unpredictability. Donadoni and Nedvěd are both comfortable attacking down the flank or cutting into the centre, while Ronaldo and Villa are both renowned for their clever movement which makes them difficult to pin down. Gerets and Brehme will maintain the width with their supporting runs from the full-back positions. In the engine room, Casemiro is the athletic destroyer while Thiago pulls the strings. Alongside Gerets and Brehme, the back four is completed by the elegant Belodedici and the tenacious man-marking of Ferrara, with the towering Courtois between the sticks.

Against Physiocrat, we will place more emphasis on defending the wide areas which is where his biggest threat resides. Donadoni and Nedvěd are both tireless workers who will track their full-backs dutifully, allowing Gerets and Brehme to focus primarily on tracking Best and Figo. We don't consider Barzagli or Vierchowod to be major threats on the ball, so we will concede possession to them and look to apply pressure once the ball enters the midfield zone. Villa will drop back to aid in that defensive effort, while Ronaldo stays high up the pitch to maintain a constant threat on the counter attack.

Voted for prolifik due to the R9 vs. Barzagli match-up (honestly given how effective late career Piacenza Vierchowod was against R9, if his CB's were on opposite sides I'd have voted for physio).

What's the Caf opinion on Verratti here? I've always thought he was better played as CM than as DM/DLP, though he could do a job there. Perennial underachiever (as with most PSG players with few exceptions). Did ok in Euro'20, but just doesn't make the grade consistently.

Leaning towards prolifik. That front two + wingers are superb.

ffs both teams are brilliant, no flair draft my ass

Even teams, nice fits and good choices for the respective shapes.

Probably edging towards Physio with the extra man in the middle in Verratti taking control of the play and then feeding in Best and Figo.

I don't think the side of the CBs matters that much as R9 will drift left and right anyone. And Vierchowod with his younger pace would be a particularly tough task for R9.

I do like Prolifik's side. Villa is a great partner for R9.

That said I think Edwards will be able to impose himself in midfield giving a great platform for Best and Figo. I do really think Best will cause Gerets all sorts of problems here with his free role. Donadoni will help out but I really think my left flank needs an RB a tier above Gerets.

That's convinced me enough to change my vote

I specifically put him on the left because of Barzagli ffs

Why would Ronaldo be drifting right when he clearly has a more favourable matchup against the right-sided CB?

It's just the nature of his game to roam, that's all.

It's a dull question, but how will you stop Best?
Hard to claim definitively that you'll "stop" a player like Best, but the primary responsibility would fall on Gerets or Ferrara depending on where exactly he pops up on our left side. We have a spare man in defence plus Casemiro patrolling in front of the back four, so it's not going to be a one-man job.
