Big Dunk Tactics

Flexible 4-1-3-2 shape. Solid and compact in the defensive phase, clever movement and direct in the attacking phase.

Law and Seeler are unleashed in my system. My potent strike partnership offers off-ball industry, clever link-up play across the pitch and elite finishing. Two hard-working forwards who will make intelligent runs in both the inside and outside channels. Häßler, Jugović, Matthäus and Kaltz will supply worldclass crosses and long passes to my front two. Seeler and Law are both lethal in the air, in the box or running into the last third on the end of crosses. Law and Seeler's intelligent movement will pull my opponent's defence out of position, creating space for each other or my midfielders to exploit.

Both Jugović and Häßler can drift inside from the wing into clever positions between the lines. Two very industrious and creative side midfielders, who will help defensively, supporting my fullbacks and help in the build-up phase, able to tuck in or stay wide. Voronin is the perfect defensive screen in front of my back line, while linking defence to the attack with his excellent ball distribution. Voronin can also sit deeper between my centrebacks, never allowing us to be outnumbered defending a counterattack. The defensive security and high workrate of Voronin, Häßler and Jugović provides the platform for Matthäus to play his peak box-to-box role, with the freedom to make his driving penetrative runs beyond Law or Seeler. When defending my midfield quartet will form a compact line.

Stam and Buchwald are two very tough defenders, excellent man-markers, physically dominant and able to defend against both strong target men, technical forwards or pacy dribbling attackers. Kaltz is a very consistent fullback, known for his crossing ability and defensive skills. Kaltz will be encouraged to overlap Häßler, supporting the attack. Briegel is a versatile defender boasting incredible physique and able provide width down the flank or inverting centrally.

Engima_87 Tactics

Formation: 4-3-3, similar to Bayern around Robbery and Lewa. Exploit the flanks, moderate press and control the proceedings in the middle of the park.

Defence:

Two great full backs in Cole and Zanetti, with the latter being the more attacking one in this game. Cole will be in his balanced role, providing support in attack. Dias and Cannavaro are at the heart of defence. Dias will be key in his distribution from the back, Cannavaro as a stopper and foil alongside him. Moderate defensive line.

Midfield:
Arie Haan
will act as a holder which is something he made a living out of during his heyday. He was a tenacious player with good playmaking skills and powerful shot. Next to him we have Pool's powerhouse and midfield general Souness, acting in his main conductor role. Rakitic will perform his Barca role contributing in both phases, keep things ticking.

Attack:
The focal point of the team - one of the finest wingers the game ever seen, which also enjoyed great success playing together - Robben and Ribery. As a complete central forward we have Marco van Basten who would feed off the creativity behind him but also be what would be expected from modern #9.

Focal points:
- Robbery and Van Basten. A trio that had it all and would be very difficult to stop.
- Defensive line consisting of two of the most balanced full backs that are solid at the back and can keep things tight. In the Dias/Cannavaro is also IMO a very complimentary pair and as good as it gets given the theme of the draft
- midfield line that can control the pace and tempo of the game, but also each one of them can contribute in the defensive phase and harass the opposition and force them into losing possession.

A little bit of Marco magic:

Rakitic a complete midfielder:

Prefer Dunk's midfield and Enigma's back 4, both forward lines & keepers being awesome. A draw for me.

That's a really nice midfield set-up from BD, clean fits in all 4 spots.

Tow great teams. Giving this to Enigma as BD midfield needs a bit more flair. A very Mourinho team and Matthaus is fine there, but would have preferred a more dedicated creative player there.
Given the theme of the draft (no playmakers or attacking midfielders available) I think I have built a creative enough unit to surround Matthäus:

Voronin - very neat in possession and able to play clever vertical passes forward. There is no defensive midfielder I would have over him to fulfil the job I have assigned him.

Häßler - a skilled playmaker whose crossing and through balls are world class. Not a pace merchant on the wing but his dribbling skills and movement make up for that.

Jugović - the best passing range of my midfield quartet (short or long), and the ideal ball carrier on the left.

Seeler & Law - they’re not stationary in the opponent’s box, but will get involved deep and centrally too.

I would say a ‘flair’ playmaker would actually be an unwanted passenger on my team, as I need high workrate players, contributing both in the defensive phase and build up phase.

All the best @BIG DUNK !

couple of thoughts as I do rate your team high from those from the first round:

- imo Ribery and Robben should have some luck against your pair of full backs. Ribery especially is up against Kaltz who was very attacking minded and prone to lapses of concentration at the back. His best ability was that in the offensive end and where he made a name for himself.

- Robben is the elusive dribbler type whose directness might also trouble Briegel who was a very solid all rounder but might find it a tad tougher task here.

- Hassler most likely will occupy the inside channel where again Kaltz will most likely the one tasked with providing width on that side and further probably allowing more space on the outside left channel.

- our midfield is probably better suited at controlling the proceedings whilst your is more counter attacking based and our full backs are suited to counter Jugovic/Hassler who weren’t renown with their pace and their qualities were based on different skillset.

Yes, I had your team as one of my favourites too.

Addressing your points:

- Kaltz was terrific going forward but his defensive quality is sometimes overlooked (put in some solid games/season as a centreback or sweeper too) so has the positional intelligence to add to his technical abilities. Kaltz is also supported by Stam/Voronin/Häßler in that right channel against Cole-Ribery.

- I actually like the Briegel versus Robben matchup. We know what Robben is going to do, and Briegel was very aggressive and smart outwide or especially inside with his marking assignment. He possesses the pace and physique to at least make Robben’s inverted cut in less easy.

- Kaltz’s ability to overlap or underlap, and Häßler’s workrate on the outside or inside is more of a benefit than a weakness IMO. Great synergy, ball distribution and work rate from that duo.

- I never saw Haan as a controller or an elite holding man, enough to handle my attack or peak-Matthäus. His ball distribution or on-ball technique won’t be good enough to be press-resistant against my team. Souness was not a ‘conductor‘ either from my estimation. I.e not of Kroos/Schweinsteiger/Thiago passing range quality. More aggressive and tough tackling box to box midfielder. I always saw Terry McDermott as the more gifted creative passing midfield partner. Rakitic is an effective link up midfielder though. Yes, our attack is based on ball movement, intelligent positioning and clever movement than on pace.

Not sure if we still need to post to have votes counter but going with Enigma even if both teams are well constructed because those two flanks are just too juicy. Will need a cm in the next round if he goes through though.

Same, really like both teams but Enigma absolutely nailed the wide positions.

This is tight but going with BD. His midfield will be an absolute pain to play against and the Law-Seeler combo has an excellent mix of work rate and all round ability.

damn again brilliant teams, went with dunk someone finally built a proper Matthaus team but Voronin was a vote decider as he would be crucial in helping out wide.

enigma while has a brilliant team, something a bit better and more creative then Rakitic in final third and it would be a different game.

Tbh the all roundness of Rakitic is the reason I went with him as he will add a bit of everything especially when playing against a team with stacked midfield.

he does have a creative spark in him too as he has more assists than Kroos and Modric in la liga. He’s not in their class bracket but has proven to be a very good playmaker for both Sevilla and Barca

Hassler's one of my favourite German midfielders...great skills, balanced being safe on the ball and having consistent direct creativity very well, high workrate, dedicated, and could play in the centre, as a side midfielder or a ten. Not notably talented defensively or super physically gifted, but could compensate for that (or chaotic games that were tougher to get a possession rhythm going ) with toughness, effort and positional smarts. He's about as close as it gets to seeing how someone like Iniesta would have likely played and been perceived had he came through in the 70s/80s. I think he suffered from the relative lack of appreciation for playmakers that were in a more collective, supporting mold and didn't fully fit into the classic ten with more goal threat or centre-mid orchestrator styles, especially in foreigner-rule Italy days.

Missed the game. But initial thought that Enigma's would be like City, with their 4th League winners in a row.

But he'd probably go to the next round through the best loser backdoor.
