Pat Tactics

Overview:
A possession-based 4-3-1-2, with a high line, high press, and interchanging attacking three.

  • The exceptionally aggressive and energetic attacking trio of Butragueno, Rooney and Suarez are key to implementing the high press. Equally the twin 8s Bernardo and Ardiles are made for an aggressive pressing game.
  • The intensity of the press encourages the opposition to play the long ball to escape: the GOAT sweeper-keeper in Neuer, two particularly aerially dominant central players in Mozer and Rodri, and a very quick and athletic backline in general provide the necessary security to defend against that.
  • Marcelo and Kimmich are close to the top of the pile in terms of ability in possession and chance creation from the full-back position.
  • Rodri and Bernardo have proven their ability to impose a possession style at the elite level, and Ardiles was similarly press-resistant and responsible in his use of the ball.,
  • The three forwards Rooney, Butragueno and Suarez all boast an immense capacity for off-the-ball running and the ability to operate across the frontline that will allow them to rotate freely. They've all had multiple league seasons where they've hit double digits in both goals and assists (9 times for Suarez!), and all can decide a match with a moment of individual brilliance. Rooney should love the scope he has to get involved in general play from this withdrawn role.

TRV Tactics

THE TEAM

We will play a 4-3-3 formation.

The core foundation of the team is its loaded defense. Vogts is arguably the best defensive right back of all time and on the other flank is Lizarazu who was one of the most consistent full-backs ever and one of the few top full-backs who was very good both attacking as well as defensively. Maldini and Collovati form the central defense pairing. Whats there to say about Maldini other than he is the GOAT defender of all time. Alongside him is 1982 World Cup winning centre-back Collovati, who partnered Scirea in the heart of the defense during the legendary World Cup campaign in 1982.

In midfield we are rolling a 3-man midfield of Petit, Davids and Nedvěd. Petit is the perfect holding midfielder because he was a master at plugging the gaps in midfield and in this role will be able to maximize his long range passing from deep. The man had a great eye for a pass from deep and will look to initiate swift counter-attacks from the back like he did in his Arsenal days. Alongside him is Davids. As the great Marcelo Lippi said, Davids was a "one-man engine room" in his prime who did the job of two people in midfield. His engine and tenacity combined with his superb close control of the ball in tight spaces will be vital in breaking the opposition press. Nedvěd rounds up the midfield. One of the best attacking players of the modern era, Nedvěd was such a complete player. Fantastic passer of the ball and a marauding runner with the ball, Nedvěd's driving runs from midfield would be vital in opening up and piercing through opposition midfield and defense. And if you give him room you are screwed because man has a history of scoring rockets with both his left foot and right foot. And last but not the least, Nedvěd's insane work-rate in midfield. With him and Davids, we have two midfielders who could run non-stop all game long without a break and cover up the space and gaps in midield allowing very little time on the ball for opposition midfielders and attacking players.

Up-front, we have an attacking triumvirate of Garrincha, Lewandowski and Son. Garrincha is the GOAT winger of all time. Not much more needs to be said about him really. On the opposite flank, we have Son, who is one of the best wide attackers in English Premier League history. A fantastic finisher who is a master at running between the lines and exploiting the space. With the attention Garrincha and Lewandowski would command, there would be lot of space that would be opened up in opposition defense and who better to exploit it than statistically the best finisher in modern era. Lewandowski would lead the line for us. The best No. 9 of the last decade. An all-time great goalscorer who was robbed of an Ballon D'or in 2020, Lewy is the perfect guy to lead the line for us as he can not only be a target for the likes of Garrincha, Son, Nedvěd and Lizarazu etc to look for but also with his ability to hold-up the play and bring others into the game, be it with link-up play or knock-downs. Lewy knock-downs for a rushing Nedvěd making deep runs from midfield would be a nightmare for a lot of teams to defend against.

Initial thoughts is this would be a great game.

However, going a narrow formation vs Garrincha on one flank and Son - Lizarazu on the other is very risky.

Both Marcelo and Kimmich are supremely gifted on the ball but Garrincha vs Marcelo would be a bloodbath.

Pat's has loaded up in midfield but having guys with high engine like Davids and Nedved would be vital.

Garrincha rinsing Marcelo in 1v1s is clearly my biggest concern here but I'm relatively happy with the support structure around him. Mozer has played at LB and has the athleticism to get out there to cover if Marcelo is beaten, and Bernardo's incredible defensive work rate on that side will come in handy too.

More important is limiting Garrincha's time on the ball in the first place. Firstly, we look well-set to dominate possession here. Secondly, TRV's quality playing the ball out of defence on that side doesn't look particularly great in isolation, much less under an intense press. That Vogts/Collovati/Zoff axis could struggle here, which will not only limit their ability to get the ball to Garrincha, but probably lead to us creating chances closer to their goal.

I really think TRV will have trouble with the press of the front 3 here. I know I banged the passing ability drum in his first game, but it is a bigger issue here. Pat is setup for a decent amount of possession and he can recover the ball well. Does anyone have a good vid on Petit? I would like to try and assess his passing ability as I think he is crucial for transitions.

Hard Luck, @Pat_Mustard .

I felt I had a better team but this scoreline doesn't do justice to how close the game was imo and how good your team was.

Good game, brother.

I think you're massively underrating Petit there, man.

He wasn't exactly an out and out destroyer. He was a great ball winner but a very good passer from deep as well. Had really good technique.

This video, especially after the 1st min shows his passing range and ability to pierce dissect opposition midfield and defense with his passing after winning the possession.

Obviously he isn't an Alonso, Pirlo or a Busquets etc but then again due to the nature of the draft we aren't really gonna get those sorta players available.

Nice vid. He's definitely better than I remember at passing - there were some very good ones there. My main thought is how consistent was his passing which such a comp won't help with but thank for sharing.

Well played mate! I knew I wasn't likely to win this but I'd hoped for the odd vote as I quite liked the style match-up in terms of my press being effective. My team was better in the first round than here tbh. Couldn't find any way to upgrade it with the first two picks being blocked, so I made it worse just for the sake of changing things up. In a more just world I'd have had first dibs on R9 ffs!

Yeah. The restrictions on first two rounds makes it so tricky to upgrade.
