Gaming Nintendo Switch 2 | Announced. Nintendo Direct 2nd April 2025

More of the same but better

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

No real surprises so far other than it being backwards compatible with switch 1 physical games.

Talk about soft reveals. No specs. No hands-on until April. Meh.

Those little tabs to connect the joycons to the screen sure look breakable. Parents of young kids will love that.

Really surprised about April 2nd direct, thought it was going to be much earlier. At earliest it's going to release is in June but most likely late Q3 or even Q4, this goes against all the rumors that it may even be hitting shelves in Q1 / early Q2.

I guess I have so much to play on current Switch that I'm not really too bothered about it.

I'm probably gonna get it pretty quickly after release, but I'll most likely just end up playing games I haven't played on the original Switch for a while.

:(

What about Tekken 8 or Street Fighter 6? Silent Hill 2 Remaster?
 Your first barometer is whether it can play seamlessly on a PS4. Second is whether the company is already working with Nintendo. Unless they're negotiating new deals, you're not going to see their content on the Switch (2).

Tekken hasn't been on the Switch, so 8 is unlikely.

It’s a day 1 buy for me surely but I don’t really urgently need it either. Hoping for a good launch library with a 3D Mario game.

Day 1 for me. Skipped the Switch so plenty to choose from.

Will people have to re-purchase games or nah?
I don't think so. The backwards compatibility is for both physical and digital. Physical you obviously don't have to purchase again, so it'd be weird if you had to re-purchase digital games.

The announcement was a bit pointless and now we have to wait until April for more information/games. Weird strategy in my opinion.

Oh sweet summer child

I hope you're right though

Maybe it's just me but I can think of very few games people would be lining up to re-buy at this stage.

Nintendo already went full in on remastering the best Wii U titles so they've gotten their money's worth on those games. They can't possibly expect people to buy them three times because, well, it looks well greedy.

The mainstays that might have been rebought within the first few years of release are well due for a sequel (Mario 3D, MK8, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Splatoon, Fire Emblem). They'll probably be planning a definitive edition of ToTK because they've been holding back already on DLC, hence they probably won't expect people to rebuy ToTK, but rather just the DLC expansion. The outlier is BotW but that's a very old game at this point. Would people want to rebuy it again?

I expect Nintendo have planned the release of Switch 2 with these things in mind which is why it's been a slow almost two years since ToTK came out.

I think I've read they weren't planning DLC for Tears of the Kingdom.

The whole console has basically leaked already so they just wanted to confirm that to prevent further talk. Not that there was anything in the trailer that hadn’t already been out there.

yup, leaks forced their hand. No way did they want to announce now

Possible open world style Mario Kart?

It could do with a hard reboot.

Didn’t read this.

I was gonna say I remember playing Tekken on a Switch.

But it was the PSP.

They had to announce in Q1 as that’s what they’ve told their shareholders but it would have probably been a mid March announcement or something.
