Gaming Nintendo Switch 2 | Announced. Nintendo Direct 2nd April 2025

Needs to be a completely new Mario Kart. Away with the red shell! And in with some innovation and fresh ideas.

About time they brought F-Zero back, too.

You’d think they have a solid and varied array of titles lined up with their first party leads bringing oomph to the table.

Need this to come out in June so it can accompany me on a slew of long haul flights in the upcoming months, whilst my Switch gets palmed off to others in the travelling parties.
Yes, and blue shell.

Kids are all obviously very different so no generalization but I always have the voice of my cousin in the back of my head who, with two much older sons (~12 and 17yo), basically mentions gaming as the major impact to his kids (Fifa now) and rhe gates of hell. I also didn‘t forget how it affected myself when I got a NES back in the day - had no gameboy.

I do sometimes worry about this. I don’t want them to hand no attention span or fried dopamine receptors. On the other hand, I’d like them tech savvy to hopefully get an advantage in what I think will be a drastically different job market when they’re adults. My eldest is currently making power point presentations at age 7 and I’ll teach him basic videography soon. Plus some initial teaching on AI.

Both of my boys are very physical and social too - lots of sport and activity. I’m incredibly pleased with how they are turning out in general.

It’s not easy though. There’s a lot in society that can lead people down bad paths and it’s hard always to anticipate what we might be doing to negatively impact upon them. I got divorced last year so my main focus has been getting them through that. So far, so good.

I think the main thing I want them wary of as they get older is porn as I feel it’s incredibly destructive at a young age and the current stats on age of first exposure is shocking.

Anyway, I digress. Back to gaming :)

Let’s hope they do a good job differentiating it from the Wii and Wii u disaster. Wii U had a solid amount of games, but they didn’t do a good job marketing it.

They will also have more competition this time for the handheld market. Steam Deck and the other PC handhelds, as well as the rumoured PS(@esmufc07)and Xbox handhelds(@Alock1). So the pricing needs to be sensible as the competition for handhelds is increasing.

It might sound silly but at this point I don't think the Switch has any real contenders. They basically have the whole Japanese market now, even Sony have pretty much given up there to focus on the West. If they don't, as you say, make a total balls of things and just release a Switch 2 that's a more powerful version of the first with upgrades then it'll dominate.

Stuff like the Steam Deck and those unannounced Sony/Xbox aren't even in the same ballpark as the Switch 2 would be.

They just need to call it switch 2 and people will know what it is. Apple has conditioned people to know the bigger number means newer model.

But knowing Nintendo; they’ll probably do some dumb shit.

God I loved F-ZeroX

Personally not seeing the benefit to introduce children that early to gaming. That being said, my daughter got 8yo in Dec and I'm probably getting the Switch 2.
Ive only played 2 player games with my son so far.

Very time limited and all about co-operation and communication while he had chicken pox. We’ve had a lovely time doing it and had some nice laughs. We’ve also used it to help practice his reading, letter recognition, sound blending etc. I guess it just depends on how you use it.

We’ve not played any this week now he’s better but I will let him play a bit with me in future. But you’re right the best thing for young kids is real world play. That doesn’t mean there’s no benefits to something like a switch in extreme moderation.

Nintendo still being quiet probably means there'll be no announcement tomorrow, as you'd be expecting announcement of the announcement like they always do. Maybe later today.

I was going to buy a switch but thought it'd be a waste of money. All I'd play is Pokemon on it. No interest in Mario or any of the other Nintendo games. Wish they had more interesting story type games to play.

There's a lot of classic games on the store you might enjoy especially if you're looking to utilise the portable capabilities of the console.

With modern capabilities, they could make a stunning follow-up, but I'm not sure if its PC anymore to try and frazzle the senses of the consumer

I miss the times you'd play at hyper speed with the :o face trying to process everything in real time.

Not sure if that's permitted anymore.

Not sure if any of those can muscle in on Nintendo's well established turf. Nintendo have dominated the handheld market for decades now and are the go to console for the majority. They are also true handhelds in that you can take them on the go with you and play them for hours.

Those super duper stations with premium graphics and processing power have terrible battery life and rapid battery degradation. OK for playing at home, but not practical when it comes to being an actual handheld unless you have a plug in power outlet nearby.

Can see some having them in addition to their Switch, but not instead of. That'd be a very niche market indeed.

Absolutely I used to love spin smashing your “rival” as you enter the final lap or the desperate dash for energy strips as you’ve boosted too much.

Any news on the specs? Will we finally see some of the headline games on it next to Nintendo’s? Then for me it will be the console to buy. Will get this.

Digital Foundry reckon it will be base PS4 levels of power as far as I remember

It will also likely have Nvidia DLSS technology which will greatly aid it in getting the latest games to run

Keep in mind it will also have things that the PS4 lacks:
DLSS + 12GB RAM + Fast Storage + Modern CPU/GPU

This appears to be a true generational leap for Nintendo.

Can't bloody wait to see some games on this thing!

If it’s better than the PS4 then it’ll have brilliant games along side the already brilliant Nintendo games. No need to buy a pig ugly massive PS5 anymore. For me it needs good sport games like football or NFL etc, and some good titles. I don’t need super duper graphics (even on my 4K tv), ps4 level graphics are already more than satisfactory, it’s the gameplay what ultimately matters. The only thing left to consider a PS5 for me would be the superior loading times. I reckon Nintendo could smash the opposition with this.

If real Nintendo's sentinels will have their collective heads on spikes by morning.
Aren't there fake specs released before every big reveal, be it Nintendo or otherwise? I've never seen Nintendo release this much info about specs, seems fake. Unless its been confirmed by multiple reliable sources

If this can play 2K at 60 FPS instead of 30 that current Switch does, it’s the only console I ever need.

Full specs have leaked, it seems:

This seems to be rehashing 2021 info? Or is there something in that list that's new info?

Way back in June 2021, noted technology leaker kopite7kimi posted a detailed picture of Nvidia's T234 processor, revealing for the first time that Nintendo would be receiving a customised variant, dubbed T239. In the two years that followed, a wealth of overwhelming evidence has essentially confirmed that they were right. The T239 is an advanced mobile processor, based on an octo-core ARM A78C CPU cluster, paired with a custom graphics unit based on Nvidia's RTX 30-series Ampere architecture, combined with some backported elements from the latest Ada Lovelace GPUs - and with an all-new file decompression engine for fast engine. It also supports Nvidia's console-specific graphics API, all but confirming that it's destined for the next generation Switch.
