Midfielder Nicky Butt is hoping to return to action for Manchester United next week.
The 27-year-old has not played since having surgery on an ankle injury he picked up during England's 2-2 draw with Macedonia last October.

"I'm pretty close now, it's just a case of hoping not to get any reaction from the ball work I'm doing," Butt told MUTV.

"With a bit of luck, I should be ready in a week.

"If I rush back, and it swells up, it could be another couple of months so it would be a bit silly to rush back."

Butt may struggle to regain his place in the United midfield with skipper Roy Keane fit again and Argentine Juan Sebastian Veron in good form.

However, Butt insisted the competition for places was a good thing for the club's chance of recapturing the Premiership title.

"It's a healthy thing to have a strong bench," Butt added.

"It's good to look at the bench and know we have players of that calibre to come on.

"I'm sure other teams see that as well and get a bit scared."

United's next Premiership game is away to West Brom on 11 January.

Great news, just gives us that extra variation and strength. Always gives 100% as a United player, when ever he's called upon. A credit to himself and Manchester United <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

Yes, as long as he is out again by the time we play you in March.

;)

He is a player that gives his all - just the sort I like.

Great news. That means we have everyone back i think.
Until last season he was really one of the unsung hero's. He's been a very important player for us.
It vital for us to have 2 or 3 options for every position. Although you have to say at the moment he is 3rd choice for defensive midfielders position.

Our bench would be significantly strengthen. SAF will now have the option of fielding keane and butt in tough away matches instead of veron.

:)

Yeah, in away games we need tenacious midfielders and Kaene and Butt will do justgreat for me :)
