Midfielder Nicky Butt is hoping to return to action for Manchester United next week.
The 27-year-old has not played since having surgery on an ankle injury he picked up during England's 2-2 draw with Macedonia last October.
"I'm pretty close now, it's just a case of hoping not to get any reaction from the ball work I'm doing," Butt told MUTV.
"With a bit of luck, I should be ready in a week.
"If I rush back, and it swells up, it could be another couple of months so it would be a bit silly to rush back."
Butt may struggle to regain his place in the United midfield with skipper Roy Keane fit again and Argentine Juan Sebastian Veron in good form.
However, Butt insisted the competition for places was a good thing for the club's chance of recapturing the Premiership title.
"It's a healthy thing to have a strong bench," Butt added.
"It's good to look at the bench and know we have players of that calibre to come on.
"I'm sure other teams see that as well and get a bit scared."
United's next Premiership game is away to West Brom on 11 January.
