Sheffield Wednesday Reserves 0
United Reserves 2
Nicky Butt made a goalscoring return to action as United Reserves beat Sheffield Wednesday's second team 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Midfielder Nicky, partnering Michael Stewart in the heart of the team, scored a cracking goal in the eighth minute, volleying home a Kieran Richardson corner from outside the area. He'll be reliving that one on the training pitch on Wednesday!
Jimmy Davis almost doubled the Reds' lead in the 28th minute after great work by Luke Chadwick, but the Bromsgrove-born striker smashed his shot against the bar from a great position.
Despite dominating the game, the Reserves went into the break just a goal to the good - echoing the current form of the first team.
Butt and Stewart were replaced with Neil Wood and Darren Fletcher in the 54th minute, and the double substitution co-incided with the game opening up more.
Daniel Nardiello broke in the 56th minute, and only a great save from the home keeper at Hillsborough kept the young Reds striker out. Two minutes later, Mark Lynch had to be at his best to clear off the line from a swift Wednesday attack.
A superb Luke Chadwick run ended with a good shot and another great save from the Wednesday keeper on the hour mark, and a minute later Nardiello headed just wide from a Richardson corner.
Wednesday, who have won just once in the FA Premier Reserve League all season, finally capitulated to the Reds pressure ten minutes from time, when Nardiello headed home, from a Richardson corner. The strike was Daniel's tenth in eleven Reserve outings this season.
All in all a successful night - a first win for new Reserves coach Ricky Sbragia, and a useful run-out for the fit-again Nicky Butt.
United: Carroll; Rankin, Pugh, Roche, Lynch; Richardson, Butt (Fletcher 54), Stewart (Wood 54), Chadwick; Nardiello, Davis.
