Nice interview with Nicky Butt

Butt talking to Giggs about Greenwood, that'a a sentence with a lot of baggage. Footbally speaking, of course.

Wish someone would ask him for the details of the fight between Keane and Schmeichal that he 'refereed'

Do we defo think it was Murtough Butt was referring to? Murtough had joined United in 2013 yet the person Butt was talking about seemingly had just gotten there recently. It sounds more like Nick Cox (the academy guy) to me. TBH I saw the High Performance Podcast with Cox and found him to be a bit pretentious - 'I make my players feel loved and cherished' type rhetoric, clichés about 'holistic nurturing' and so on without the feeling of a great deal of substance. Basically the opposite of Nicky Butt who comes across as having very little emotional intelligence but no BS and probably good at not indulging spoilt brat behaviour.

Having said this, I never felt Butt was a particularly inspired choice as Head of First Team Development. Despite what I said about Cox coming across as a bit of a new school snake oil salesman, Butt gives off 'get into em, feck em up' football dinosaur vibes like Scholes does with his punditry. I couldn't see him being intelligent enough to be anything more than a lower league journeyman manager.

(Insert joke here about Cox and Butts not playing well together)

Id guess Butt asked not to be directly quoted.

“Butt is believed to have clashed with United's football director John Murtough, promoted to the role shortly before he left. He soon sought a way back in to football but it was a dismal experience”.

He also said he wasn’t happy having directors try to tell him about football, when he wouldn’t presume to tell a director how to do his job.

Interesting part about Murtough/board and Greenwood.

Boardroom:

'I was sick of people upstairs telling me about football. If I was to tell people in the boardroom how to run a football club they would just look at me wouldn't they?

And about Greenwood:-

Jose was like: "Get him" but I told him he was still at school and there were laws,' smiles Butt.

'I said to Ryan [Giggs] recently that Mason is the only one that I have seen who could have come anywhere near him at 17. Cos he was that good. Ridiculous.

'We played Liverpool away in the academy. We were getting beat 2-0 and he came on. He scored left foot free-kick, right foot volley, a header and then a right foot free-kick. And you are looking at him thinking: 'How can this boy not be the next big thing?'. Big, strong, quick.
