Niall, I've thought of a way to fund the Caf

Enable a small amount of betting to take place. Not large amounts, just little silly bets, say a limit of 50 quid or something. Suppose in every forum there was a 'Bets' sticky or button...United-based, Football-based, political or whatever depending on the forum. In the general us cnuts would bet on absurd things obviously. Then transfers, other sports, whatever.

It could be done through PayPal, by gentlemens' agreement, with a small commission to the Caf. If you didn't pay up you'd be barred from betting anymore.

You might have to fill in a few forms, but then some income would flow in, subsidising the Caf and making a moderate profit for you.

He'd need to get a betting licence probably. Might even have to get one for all the countries that the Caf members are in.

I think it should be restricted to a private forum.

OK

Is that expensive?

Or, we could keep it implicit...posters make bets with each other, independently of the Caf, and just happen to send a little something to admin. Open to abuse, obviously, but gentlemens' agreements do work sometimes.

Or is that what you ment by Private Forum?

Probably more sensible to get an arrangement with betfair for a percentage of staked money. They should be happy to do it plus it entails no risk for the proprietor.

Mind you if you want a private betting forum I'm in - if Cal will give me odds on Arsenal events.

It would have to be a gentleman's agreement anyway - Niall can't impose much punishment beyond a banning.

Having only vetted members taking part would probably allow Niall to get away without the licence agreements. Out of necessity the negotiations and bets would have to be conducted in a private forum where only said members have access.

I think peterstorey's betfair idea is interesting - but does that allow non-UK and Eire posters to take part?

I think most nationals can take part if they've got a VISA/Mastercard. I don't really know if there's enough in it for Betfair having thought about it a bit more but I'dve thought it worth an approach.

Benefits to Cafe members:
generally best odds
good liquidity
don't disqualify winners lke bookmakers
+ could negotiate a cafe discount on commission

Benefits to Betfair:
get a few high rollers
enough extra business? 1000 Cafe members staking average 1000 pounds pa?
would be extensible to other sporting groups
sounding board for innovative bets

No, you can't. I wasn't really proposing it as an direct alternative to to your idea. For example, Betfair are not going to run a book on "Who's the biggest tosser on the Caf". But it might offer more betting opportunities if there were a Caf user group (eg goal time spreads, Tim Howard blunder-count etc etc), help pay for running costs and give a better deal to punters.

How much does this place cost to keep it up and running?
