NHL season is officially canceled

I'm not at all happy over this, and IMO Bettman and Goodeman need to fly over to the UK, and we should employ a certain Mr Keane  to sort these two out and get an agreement for next season.

This years cup could have gone down to a cup competition in other words something similar to the FA cup, but that's just my opinion.

Anyway my fear now is that this move is going to cause quite a few teams to fold or re-locate. Some of which would be good, and others awful. The NHL would be better taking more teams back to Canada, thus making it popular again very quickly.

Maybe they should never start again and see of anyone notices or cares.

i don't care
i really don't care...

Most of you sound exactly like the average American when they are talking about "soccer." :wenger:

I am an American...but I still think the NBA is shit and so is NASCAR...and golf. I find it amusing that the media/US fans slam soccer for being "unmanly" yet loft golf up onto a pedestal for being "a gentlemanly sport." fecking nimwits.

Agreed. I really like the international tournaments when played outside of North America because the rinks are bigger and the style of play is more wide open.

Many people think Bettman will change the game during the summer so when hockey returns, if it does next year, there will a new, more exciting product. No more red lines (eliminate the ridiculous two line pass rule), wider rinks, more obstruction penalties for clutching and grabbing, and restriction on goalie padding in relation to goalie's body size. And maybe a couple other minor changes. Just hope he does not eliminate fighting. It has it's place in hockey as it ensures those that take cheap shots or intend to injury star players will be dealt "one-the-ice justice."

And what will Bettman get for giving the fans a more exciting product?

He'll get fired, of course.

I don't think they can make the rinks wider because of the arena configurations (stupid basketball courts) but I agree with the rest. I watch college hockey and love the fact that they don't have the 2-line pass rule.

I personally would like to see contraction to 24 teams, maybe 26...and a move away from sharing arenas with NBA teams. Neither will occur, though I wouldn't be surprised to see a 1-2 teams fold within 24 months. The NHL has overexpanded, and not just that, but expanded into areas where no one cares for hockey as they'd rather watch NASCAR or wrestling on tv. Yikes.

And I hate to say this, but hockey would probably pick up in the US if more blacks played. Right now, seems most hockey fans are 1) Canadian or from north/northeast US, and 2) white. (I fall into the second category)

Anyone who has attended both a NBA and NHL game can attest to the large disparity between the two crowds.

I heard that the NHL is planning to implement changes that are used in the AHL:

- Penalty shots to break ties
- Wider blue lines to alleviate traffic
- Prohibiting goalies from handling the puck behind the net

They are considering removing the red line regarding two-line passes, but keep it for icing.

There's a group of players led by Brendan Shanahan trying to open talks and save the season.

There's no guaranty that they'll play next year either.

Of course they'll play. The players will have to accept whatever the clubs propose.

Just try loosing 6M-7M per year...

about bloody time as well, should implement no-touch icing also

could drop the idea of penalty shots to break the ties, not a fan of that.. don't see what the problems are with draws

yeh, think that will be introduced in the next season...if there's one

and now they are discussing whether roughing should be a part of the game or not..
of 'coz... 1) handsome blocks 2) the game itself 3) fightings :D that's what I paid for lol
