All my family are Derry but the fact we spent our tender years in Omagh where my Father was working meant most of the family became Tyrone converts.I remind them of course I never deserted my birth county.Hell of alot of Cookstown boys and girls go to school in Magherafelt ,mine go to the convent fair few there along with alot of Antrim.I have an uncle living in Cookstown, now a long retired dentist in his 80s great man ,won a national league medal in 1947 with Derry.Paddy Mcerlean
Good for you man
To be honest, the local Secondary school in Cookstown (Holy Trinty) was shit, apart from the fact Peter Canavan taught there - it wasnt an option to school there. It was either Magherafelt or Dungannon & since I didnt pass my 11+, i'd no chance of going to a decent school i.e. Grammar school & St. Pius X is as close to a Grammar School as you'll get, alot of kids that passed their 11+ went there anyway - it was a great school & i've very happy memories of the place!
Our School Principal Sean O'Kane was from Cookstown as were alot of the teachers. Brian McIvor the ex-Donegal manager was my History teacher - lovely man & die-hard football fan!
We weren't allowed to go to St. Pius so we appealed & we won. There was 6 of us - all lads & football mad, so we wanted to go to the best school possible for education & equally important - football & sports!
As a Tyrone man, i'll get ribbed for saying this but i couldnt feck it - I love Doire - the County & the City, and have spent alot of my early life there or there abouts. Good genuine people - same as Tyrone. Very knowledgeable football fans also!
We all loved the Convent girls btw - there something about girls that go to a Convent. We imagine them to be dirty biches - just the way we like it
Apologies if you have sisters that go there - i'm sure they are good lovely Catholic girls
Thats great about your Uncle. McErlean is real Doire name eh?!
Went to St. Pius X with Nicholas McErlean from Ballymaguigan - quiet but very good chap. Lost touch with all school mates after school, college & moving to Armagh at 17yrs old - the advent of the internet will maybe make it possible to get in touch with them, which would be very sweet!
