Skysports.com understands Newcastle will not be offering star midfielder Joey Barton a new contract at St James' Park.

is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Newcastlehttp://topics.skysports.com/newcastle/?section=football

this summer and the club were thought to be keen on agreeing an extension with the midfield dynamo.

However, after talks with the player's representatives Newcastle have decided not to offer a new deal to Barton and will allow the former Man City

man to see out his current contract.

Barton's agent, Willie McKay, has confirmed Newcastle have decided not to offer the 28-year-old a new deal after holding talks with club officials over his future.

"I had a meeting with Newcastle managing director Derek Llambias and club secretary Lee Charnley and they have indicated Joey will not be offered a new contract," McKay told skysports.com.

"Joey will continue to be a Newcastle player next season and then he will leave on a free transfer at the end of his contract.

"Joey would have loved to have extended his stay at Newcastle, but unfortunately it is not to be.

"Joey has loved his time at Newcastle and nothing will change his commitment for the club next season.

"Obviously we will be monitoring the situation next January to try and find a new club for Joey as he can speak to clubs from abroad in January."

The news comes as a major surprise as Barton has been Newcastle's stand-out performer this season with a number of eye-catching displays and he was named the fans' player of the season this term.

News of Barton's availability is sure to alert a number of clubs at home and abroad with the likes of Hamburghttp://topics.skysports.com/hamburg/?section=football

and Olympiakos thought to be keeping tabs on his situation.

Liverpool & Aston Villahttp://topics.skysports.com/Aston+Villa/?section=football

are also thought to be keen on Barton and news of his contract situation could see them step up their interest in the player this summer.

Trying to hold them to ransom I suspect.

Really stupid decision if true, I just remembered what spastics Newcastle are.

They are a strange club, I'll give them that.

Had a fantastic season on the wing, which peetered out when Carroll left, so would be a good signing for Liverpool, that said he is a huge Evertonian so unlikely to happen.

Shall be interesting.

At some point clubs have to get their wage bill to a sustainable level. That means paying wages they can actually afford rather than keeping up with figures that other clubs are willing to pay (but can't really afford). I would imagine Barton's wages are simply too high. If Barton is looking for say £80k a week (or £70k a week) then Newcastle probably have little choice but to bring in a replacement on £30k a week.

Newcastle's current wage bill is insane given their turnover. The same could be said for the vast majority of clubs.

Decent voice of reason kundalini, but.... this is Newcastle, there's every chance they'll buy a replacement player with a more exotic name, who is not as good and they'll pay him just as much.

Odd decision IMO...the team never looks as good without him.

On the plus side...Useless Sol Campbell has left the club. Hooray!

Could be a tough season for Newcastle if they don't spend wisely. Isn't Jose Enrique expected to be off as well?

Spot on.

They probably think the money can be better spent elsewhere.

He's also nearly 30 so amaybe they won't give him as long a deal as he wants. They can also stick a real spanner in the works by keeping him till his contract expires when at 29 he might struggle to find another club who'll pay him what he's on now.

Might be a bit of brinkmanship on his part thats gotten out of hand.

Might have been that way in the old days - can't see it under Ashley. Money is the bottom line for him.

Gets a lot of stick off teh fans for counting the pennies but they're ripe for a takeover in the nect few years. Could all turn out very well for them.

I doubt this is that controversial. He's a really good player but he came in on a massive wage and is presumably after a good first season back in the PL looking for either an increase or roughly the same again, which I doubt Newcastle want to pay, given the fact every player at the club would be looking for the same. And can you imagine having to admit that you're paying Shola fecking Ameobi seventy grand a week. It doesn't bear thinking about.

He drives his team forward and can do basically everything well.

The barcodes don't even seem to be trying to sell him, or anything. Numpties.

Good player, massive massive cnut.

Thought he was barcodes best player this year, easily. Can see him going to Everton, type of deal Moyes will love.

.

Why though?

Because he tackles hard?

Is it his amazing passing? What is it?

Workrate. Spots the right ball to play. Freekicks. Breaks down opposition attacks. Tackling. Gets back to help defence.

IF this turns out not to be an agent talking up his client and IF he does leave he will be a huge loss IMO.

Sounds like his agent putting pressure on Ashley to stump up more cash than he's willing.

Barton or Parker would both be excellent for Arsenal.

They both bring that combative style to the frilly, prissy center Arsenal call a midfield.
