Sky Sports sources understand that Newcastle have turned down a 'derisory' offer from West Ham for Kevin Nolan.

The Hammers are preparing to mount a push for promotion from the Championship after suffering relegation at the end of the season, with new manager Sam Allardyce drawing up a list of transfer targets.

Nolan was believed to be one of the names at the top of their wish list and a bid was lodged with the Magpies in an attempt to secure his services.

However, Newcastle have rejected the approach as they value Nolan much higher and do not want to let their captain leave.

It emerged earlier this week that the midfielder had turned down the offer of a new contract at St James' Park, with two years still remaining on his current deal.

But that is because he wanted an improved five-year deal and Newcastle were offering a two-year extension.

The 28-year-old has been consistently impressive since making the move to Tyneside from Bolton in 2009, first helping Newcastle bounce back to the top flight and then carrying on his fine form with 12 goals in the Premier League.

I only post this because I saw a link in the comments section of a website the other day which led to a Newcastle forum where a few of the posters seem convinced that Nolan has told Newcastle he wants to go to WH to work with Allardyce again. Is he fecking mental?

he obviously rates playing under Big Sam

that and the fact Newcastle are dicking him around with his contract

Yeah, I can see him wanting to play under Big Sam but it'd be a really risky move going to a club like WH when they're likely to lose a large part of their squad this summer. Plus the constant flux regarding managers suggests Sam might not be around for long if he doesn't get a solid start.

Plus I think when you look at Nolan physically, where he already looks a bit heavy at 29, offering him a five year deal on the sort of wages he'd be on could be a risky move.

Dropping down a league after having such a good season in the PL is crazy, regardless of what manager is looking for you.

Bearing in mind Nolan is 29, I'm not sure Newcastle are wrong to have offered a 2 year deal rather than the 5 years that he was after.

Having a medical at West Ham now apparently.

(Apparently - the most used word in the 2011 summer transfer window!)

Surprising that at this stage of his career he's willing to drop down a level again :/

To be fair I think it shows how many people respect Big Sam & like working with him. Managing to get Faye & especially Nolan to drop down a division & join him at West Ham is a sign of a good manager imo.

They've probably given him a long term deal on PL money.

Faye is 33 and Nolan 29 so it's more like players not up to the pace of PL football.

I'm sorry to see Nolan go but with younger players coming in it's for the best that he moves on.

29 is hardly not up to the pace is it. You talk about him like he's 35.

Sometimes he plays like he's 35 ;)

29 is old to be giving someone a 5 yr deal which is what he wanted.

Wasn't he the top goalscorer in the Championship when he went down with the Barcodes that season? He's probably going to end up the same again. Go bet on it
