Skysports.com understands Newcastle are considering a shock swoop for striker Shefki Kuqi.

Magpies manager Alan Pardew lost the services of Andy Carroll on the final day of the transfer window when Liverpool swooped in a dramatic £35million deal.

Pardew then saw Shola Ameobi suffer a fractured cheekbone in the 1-0 defeat at Fulham on 2nd February to further deplete his choices in attack.

That has left just Leon Best, Nile Ranger and Peter Lovenkrands as Pardew's recognised attacking options.

Having seen Carroll's exit come too late in the day before the transfer window closed to bring in a replacement from another club, the St James' Park side have been scouring the free agent market for possibilities.

Experienced Finn Kuqi is available after having his contract with Championship side Swansea terminated by mutual consent last month.

The powerful 34-year-old forward, who has played for Stockport, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich, Blackburn and Crystal Palace, would bring a physical presence to the Magpies' front line.

Newcastle are currently 10th in the Premier League table but are just five points above the relegation places with the standings currently tightly packed as the season heads into the home straight.

Christ on a bike.....even at his peak he was fecking shite.

At 10am on transfer deadline day, when they'd just had a £35m bid for their best player and arguably only striker capable of scoring goals for them as a lone striker, did they not think it might be an idea to have someone else lined up in case?

When I was a kid, I was at a stockport county match with my old man and Kuqi was running so fast after a ball which was going out he had to hurdle the signs and jumped right over them and landed on me!

my claim to fame, but yeh hes shite (and heavy)

The second I read this story, the pun 'Kuqi Coup' came into my head. Should I:

a) Apply for a job at a tabloid newspaper?

b) Self-terminate?

They also want Aliadiere but he's about to join Legia Warsaw, as we speak he's on trial there and ready to accept the deal apparently.

They'd have to pay £25m for Kuqi for it to make sense. Chelsea pay Liverpool £50m for Torres, they pay £35m to Newcastle who pay £25m to whoever signs Kuqi next, the money being redistributed fair and square.
