With Estimated Retail Price Starting At €199.99/£159.99, Even More European Consumers Can Enjoy The Definitive High-Definition Gaming and Entertainment Experience

LONDON - Monday 10th March, 2008- Microsoft today announced it is lowering the estimated retail price (ERP) for its Xbox 360™ family of consoles in Europe. Now with an entry-level ERP of €199.99/£159.99, Xbox 360 is a mass market entertainment proposition with something to offer for every interest and budget.

From Friday, 14th March, Xbox 360, which includes a 20GB hard drive and one wireless controller, will have an ERP of €269.99/£199.99 – a saving of €80/£50 on the current ERP. The Xbox 360 Elite, which comes with a massive 120GB hard drive enabling consumers to store huge quantities of content downloaded from Xbox LIVE™ Marketplace as well as their own music, will have an ERP of €369.99/£259.99 – a saving of €80/£40. The Xbox 360 Arcade console, perfect for those wishing to make their first foray into the gaming and entertainment world of Xbox, will have an ERP of €199.99/£159.99 – a saving of €80/£20.

Xbox 360 is the number one next-gen console in EMEA, owning 42% of the market in terms of life-to-date revenue. Xbox 360 continues to enjoy the highest software attach rate of any game console in Europe with more than 7.0 games sold per console (PS3: 3.8; Wii 3.5) after 26 months on the market .

The new ERPs are part of Microsoft’s ongoing strategy to open up the ultimate in high-definition gaming and entertainment to an even wider audience, with an offering for everyone:

* Best Choice for Families:

* The Best Games:
o There will be over 1,000 games available on Xbox 360 by the end of the year, with something for every skill level, interest and taste.
o New community games allow gamers to sample the best of indie games, providing innovative new ways to play and enjoy
o Blockbuster franchises like Grand Theft Auto IV, with exclusive downloadable episodes on Xbox LIVE, and Rock Band make Xbox 360 the place to be this Spring
o Xbox 360 exclusives for 2008 include Fable 2, Gears of War 2 and Too Human, setting new standards for next-generation gaming

“Xbox 360 is now mass market in Europe,” said Chris Lewis, Vice President, Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business Europe. “We have reached and surpassed several key milestones that form part of our long term strategic plan to achieve critical mass in Europe; and our portfolio now offers the kind of mainstream entertainment experiences that secure wider appeal for Xbox 360. These factors allow us to execute on our strategy to widen the market for Xbox 360, as planned.

“We continue to offer intense, immersive gaming experiences for gamers – but now we’re priced in a way that will allow new consumers to find out for themselves why Xbox 360 is the ultimate in high-definition entertainment.” said Lewis. “History shows that €199/£159 is the price point where a console’s audience begins to expand, and with these new ERPs in place we’re ready to bring more consumers into the Xbox 360 world.”

This is aggressive:

Arcade - €199.99/£159.99 (Cheaper than the Wii :eek:)
XB 360 - €269.99/£199.99
Elite - €369.99/£259.99 (Now £40 cheaper than the RRP of the 40GB PS3)

That's very cheap. If I had any interest in gaming other than playing PES,Guitar Hero on the PS2 and Mario Kart on the Wii when it comes out I'd look at this as a good chance to truly go next gen (mainly so I could get the new GTA) but with the failure rate of XB360's and the fact that I'd end up hardly using it I probably won't get one. If PS3's had such an aggressive price drop I'd definitely give it more though though.

Smacks of resperation really, Microsoft must be hurting now that HD isnt going anywhere, especially given that their main console rival carries a blu-ray player.

I wouldnt be suprised to see Sony drop the price of the 40gb down a little now.

Might get another for downstairs now they're so cheap

Sony will be cutting the price of their PS3 soon, probably to coincide with the release of GTAIV or MGS4, which will no doubt boost sales dramatically. If reliabilty issues are sorted and a more varied choice of games are released on the 360, I may pick up one.

To be fair it's not really that desperate, it was due a price drop and doing this ito dop right into line with the GTA release is perfect for anyone who was waiting for a little more push to go out and get one.

My 360 broke last week, they picked it up fixed it and returned it today, and I got a free copy of Madden 07 to boot.

I don't think that Sony need to cut the price in Europe just yet, especially with the games lineup coming along, and can wait to see what effect this actually has. People that are regular game players and were simply waiting for the likes of GT5:P and MSG4 (PS3 also has GTAIV) I think will not be moved at all by this. Hitting 150 (I'm sure that it will do on Amazon and Play) quid does put this however into the mass market bracket, for casual game players - something a 300 pound price point does not, even to the point that it might even make Nintendo move, even if they do not need to.

This is all marketing cloaks and daggers though isn't it on Microsoft's part? Draw the punters in with the promise of HD gaming for the unbelievable value of 150 quid.................., and then whack - that will also be 130 quid for a 120GB HDD (or to totally rip you off 70 quid for a 20GB HDD), oh and you want to go wireless, well that will be another 60 quid please, and the subscription to XBox LIVE, that's another 40 quid; that will be 380 quid in total please... oh you want High Definition movies as well..... that's a bit difficult, but we do have this add-on that plays something called HD-DVD, now at the wonderful knockdown price of 40 quid... a total of 420 pounds please. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Microsoft do this in the US, then Sony will have to respond. But Microsoft do not need to do it in the US.
