So, basically, in a nutshell, with the help of "Smashed Hombre" I downloaded FM 2011 only to find out it wouldn't load due to a graphics set up error. After trying everything under the sun, we realised it was due to my video card, so, go figure. I need a new one.

What is the best, cheapest option of a video card that would let me run FM 11? Right now I've got GeForce 4 MX 440 with AGP 8X (whatever that means). Obviously I need a cheap, better, alternative to that, just something that is better and will run the game for my young lad.

Come on you computer legends, help me out! What's my best option and how much will it set me back?

Your on an AGP card?

I thought I was the only idiot who had it until half a year back. Basically AGP cards are absolute rubbish to say the least. You don't even get many AGP cards anymore. Does your motherboard support a PCI-E slot for a graphic card? If yes then you have many options. If not, well then you'll need to somehow find some AGP card

Indeed AGP has been dead for several years but shop around and you'll still find one that will work for you. The very minimum you'd need is the Nvidia Geforce 6 6200 which you can find for about 25€ online. That doesn't mean it will all be plain sailing though as you may also have low system memory or CPU power to run the 3D match engine.

Oh ... okay. Well to be fair I've no idea about anyting computer related, so be slow with me please. :p

How do I check the motherboard, and what am I checking for?

How do I find all that out?

Do you have a booklet or something you got with your mother board? Or do you know what motherboard you have? Just look it up online and check if your motherboard has any PCI-E slots.

I had finally bought a NVIDIA 6200 AGP card for FM 10 and it has to be said it did not work too well but that's also because my processor was terrible and my RAM was just 1.5GB

Just looked it up Does a HP Pavilion a350n computer have a PCI-E Graphics Card Slot? - Yahoo! Answers ... seems that I don't have "PCI-E slots", so how do I get them, too?

Go to Start and type System Information (or msinfo32.exe) in the command line ;)

Wait, so  what am I looking for again?

You'd no doubt be better off buying a Geforce 6800GT or a 7900GT second hand via Ebay or similar as it will give you much more GPU horsepower and cost very little. I sold a 6800GT only a couple of months back for 30€ I have another sat here boxed (and an old 8800GT but that's PCI-E) but I'm in Spain so the postage would be a waste of money and a risk for you or I'd suggest you buy this one from me. Look on Ebay for a local seller.

- Click on Start and then on All Programs.

- Click on Accessories, then click on System Tools.

- Under System Tools click on System Information.

- When System Information comes up you have to click on a subcategory in order to see information.

- You can find out about drivers, network, memory, devices, display and much more.

- Essentially every key element of your computer has a listing in System Information.

- Now you know where to come to find out anything about your system.

Specifically you want to know 3 things right now. What CPU/Processor you have, how much memory you have (RAM) and if possible the motherboard model ;)

For what it's worth I have a free 1.96 GB of virtual memory?

I don't have that "PCI E slots" thing wr8 was talking about, though.

If I guy that Geforce 6800 GT or a 7900 GT I should be able to run the game properly, right? No hidden problems you can think of?

Anything you need to know to help me find out if hidden problems are lurking?

Not so simple unfortunately. See my previous post (one above this one) and give us the details ;)

Model: DK227A-ABG t240a
Processor: x86 family 15 model 2 stepping 9 GenuineIntel~2600Mhz
Available Virtual Memory: 1.96 GB

Edit: Our posting patterns on this topic are dire if you know what I mean

You can't run Football manager!? Even my piece of Samsaung shite laptop runs FM flawlessly.

So you have a HP Pavilion T240, which is based on an old P4. Assuming you never upgraded then you have only 512MB of Ram. In all honesty I think you are going to have problems upgrading it as those old HP's have small power supply units and even smaller casing meaning you have very little room to install a big card and both those GT's are on the big side. On top of that, even if you can get the card in, up and running; You'll still be pushed to get the game running smoothly with such a limited CPU. At best you'll be playing with a small database and low details in 3D......at best.

Probably easier and a more productive to buy a new cheap PC even a modern low end machine is going to outshine your current system and should play FM with no problems.

I see. I honestly don't remember if I've upgraded or not, the wife takes care of that  but if I have would it make a significant difference or a very small one?

How much will that type of PC cost, would you estimate?

Go out and get a new PC. Your current setup seem as dire as my previous one which i just could not play on.

£200-£300 would get you something perfectly adequate.

This sounds about right in my book ;)

Did you pirate FM2011? I could help, but I'm not sure I want to help someone play a game they obtained illegally.

Yes, I did. It's not for me, it's for my younger lad and I don't have the money to throw around on luxuries atm, obviously it's your choice if you want to help or not.

If right now I was in a better financial position, I would of bought the game when my lad asked for it about 2 months ago, fact is I can't.

So yes I did, and yes I would really appreciate it if you could help, if not, that's fine. If you have children, I'm sure you will understand.
