After years of avoiding the radio and paying absolutely no regard to new bands I've turned over a new leaf. No more trawling through second hand stores and discount bins for Bowie albums or Dylan or Elvis Costello.

During the last week I've explored stuff by the Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, Cut Copy, Bonnie Prince Billy, Cut Copy, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Camera Obscura and Andrew Bird and it's restored my interest in new music.

Camera Obscura have been a particular stand out. Lush strings, textural guitars, delicate vocals, absolutely magnificent. Vampire Weekend also have some of the best riffage I've heard for a while.

Anyone who tries to claim there's no good music left simply hasn't bothered to look for it.

On that note, any album recommendations to add to the above would be welcome.

Do Make Say Think
65 Days of Static
Islands
Band of Horses
Crystal Castles
LCD Soundsystem
The Hold Steady
Jaguar Love
Les Savy Favs
Edit*
Black Moth Super Rainbow
Battles

Theres shitloads

Some of this aint particularly new, but it is overlooked

My mate loves LCD Soundsystem, and I think Pitchfork had them at number 2 for the 2007 album of the year.

I've heard Islands are good as well.

If you had to narrow that list down to three, which three would you choose? I'll spotify them.

I'd also like to add Phoenix to the list of bands that I've recently discovered are class. French band who produce melodious, harmony laden Indie pop in perfect, American-accented English.

Gotta say, Fleet Foxes is pretty good. Not everyones cup of tea, but the album is very mixed and experimental. I liked it on first listen.

At the minute im listening to alot of Battles, Islands and Crystal Castles, But from the stuff you've listed I'd say look up -

Islands
Doa Make Say Think
Band of Horses

I know theres a lot im missing, im in work so i cant check my collection. They might be worth checking out aswell-
Iron and Wine
Caribou
Broken Social Scene
British Sea Power

It's not that experimental, I fecking hate overly experimental art rock wank. They've got solid pop structures amongst all the fuzz.

I talked to another bloke about Iron and Wine in another thread and had a look at spotify. Liked what I heard.

Broken Social Scene is a band quite a few people at Uni seem to rate so I'll give them a look too.

I'm sure no one I know has heard of Band of Horses but people are obsessed with them on YAWN so I'll type them into spotify as well.

feck I love spotify.

Can't believe I've neglected new music for so long. Last time I gave a feck about new music was when the Shins, Flaming Lips, Arctic Monkeys were dominating the pretencious Indie mags.

Since then I'd got thoroughly bored with music. This has given me a new lease of life, it's like being a teenager again.

I will second LCD Soundsystem, if you like fleet foxes look out for a band called I'm from Barcelona has that same melodic soft thing going on. This is one of their songs.

Oh and I went to see Bob Dylan on tuesday, fecking awesome.

Good effort!

I really like the album Noble Beast by Andrew Bird, i'm going to see him this month, wait actually next month since it's in may...

Check out the flying club cup by Beirut, worth a listen if just for "Nantes", great song.

What Camera Obscura album is it? "Let's Get Out Of This Country"?

I quite like the more upbeat songs on it, the slower ones grate a little bit, if they could make a whole album with songs like Lloyd the title track and if looks could kill i think they'd be a lot more well known than they are.

Another example of pretty decent scottish music would be The Phantom Band. New Music isn't all shite! :D

The Camera Obscura album is My Maudlin Career, which was the one that was out last year. I've not heard previous albums, but this is from top to bottom the best album out of all the ones I've mentioned in this thread. Get onto it mate.

Great track mate, thanks for that.

alright mate, is it noble beast you've got by Andrew Bird?

get the new camera obscura album or just youtube "Floyd, i'm ready to be heartbroken" give a decent indication of the better stuff on the album.

I'll get on "My Maudlin Career", i quite rate the newer one despite a few minor grates.

No worries, if you'd like the album I can send you a rapidshare link.

Are you on last.fm? I've found a few great bands on there and the caf group radio throws up some fantastic eclectic mixes.

Sure mate, PM it away.

Not on last.fm. Not sure what it does exactly, other than tell you what you've been listening to you?

Eh? My Maudlin Career was out last year mate, surely they've not already made a new one?

EDIT: The Bird album is Armchair Apocrypha

PM sent.

Last.fm has informational pages for artists and on these it will list bands that are similar. You can also chose to stream a radio of the band you've selected and the site will play similar artists to you.

http://www.last.fm/music/I'm+From+Barcelona

Not sure if you have to sign up to see that.

Ahh yeah i was banging on about the album before that one. I'll definetely need to check out the newest one.

I've not heard Armchair Apocrypha but Noble Beast is well worth checking out so if you like Armchair Apocrypha i'd defintely give Noble beast a bash, just out this year too.

Cool mate, I'll spotify it.

Yeah, theres alot of wank out there though, so be careful

I can vouch for Broken Social Scene, and band of horses - particularly Funeral.

Just read this thread and heard fleet foxes. Where the hell has this band been? They've got some fantastic music. Lovely, rare quality music.

Isn't Funeral the first album by Arcade Fire?

There's another superb band. Neon Bible is up there in the 30 best albums I've ever heard.

I've been listening to the I'm From Barcelona album that Ivor sent me. Great pop album. Pitchfork, in their infinite wisdom, have given it 5.9. I can confirm it's worth at least an 8.

Britney and Paper Planes are worth 5.9 just by themselves.
