Tactics:
Overview ,
I’m sure a lot of you won’t read this; you’ll see the likes of Hernandez, Mata and Bale on Cal’s team and pick him without a thought!

However, just hear me out! I feel my team has a real balance to it which should give us the edge in this round

Changes
I’ve brought Sakho in for Kuzmanovic to shift Rodwell into his preferred defensive midfield position, he will be the one to stick on Mata and having neutralised the likes of Rooney earlier this season, he can do the same to Mata. Hernandez, whilst has been great this season cannot play up top by himself, he would be isolated and I believe that Sakho and Howedes can cope with him there alone.

Where we will win
Most games are won in midfield and I fully expect a midfield trio of Rodwell, Pjanic and Wilshere to dominate. There is no defensive player in Cal’s midfield, whereas mine has much more of a balance.

I fancy my attackers against his relatively weak defence (with the exception of Subotic). Uchida and Rojo are both in their first seasons in a European league and I feel my wingers can exploit this weakness. My star man going forward, Jovetic , will attack up against the relatively inexperienced right back Uchida who you might remember got made to look silly by United in the Champions League and I expect him to be given a torrid time.

Some may highlight Bale vs Elmohamady as something Cal may look at, however, I feel he is more likely to backtrack in order to aid Rojo, who is an inexperienced left back, who will have to handle a Capel/Elmohamady combination. Rodwell will be instructed to double up with Elmohamady against Bale (and superman looked extremely ordinary come the close of the season..)

Main Tactics
The tactics I would deploy would be to keep hold of possession., Rodwell will play the holding midfield role allowing the wonderfully talented duo of Pjanic and Wilshere to roam around freely, which will nightmares for Anderson, who looks like he will be leading midfield defensive duties alone.

Derdiyok will be a nuisance up top and provide room for my more creative players. Inevitably you have to fancy one of Pjanic, Wilshere or Jovetic to provide that extra bit of magic that unlocks his defence.

Tactics:

My new addition, Bale, is probably one of the best left wingers in the age group and will definitely have a lot of joy against Elmohammedy.

Whilst Dan's team has a pretty solid centre midfield, his attacking options are limited compared to my side. The combination of Mata & Chicharito is upthere amongst the best of the world regardless of age group.

Subotic & Ranocchia are both commanding centrebacks who should be able to handle the threat posted by Derdiyok.

My team is playing in white so as not to clash with Dan's side. ;)

Hello and thank you for joining us for the late kick-off.

Everyone is welcome to join in the voting.

Gotta go with Cal on this one
Dan has a nice defense but Cal has quality all over the park

Dan for me, Anderson and Granero will be pegged back in midfield cutting off the supply to his attackers.

Anderson and Granero up against Wilshire-Rodwell-Pjanic is a huge advantage in my view, Pjanic and Wilshire would regularly be ghosting past those two and dictating the play...but then Cal?'s got everything else in his favour.

I really like Subotic and Ranocchia. I can't see them having a hard time against Derdiyok who only really offers a target rather than any real individual threat, and he'll be fighting extremely hard to win anything against those two on his own.

Howedes and Sakho are both very good, no doubt, I think they're just that bit behind. And Chicharito's going to give any defence trouble while Mata's going to thrive off the space opened up for him.

I don't think there's a whole lot in it between Jovetic and Renato Augusto, both amongst the best players in their team (and very decent teams at that) and very creative. That said Schmelzer's going to cope better against his man than Uchida will, you'd think, and Jovetic could very well have an opening in defence there to bulk up the goal threat in the team and get at the centre backs.

Gulf in class between Capel and Bale really, although you can see both having a fun time against their fullback. Bale had a fairly mediocre game against Sunderland this season but that was up against a much more defensively sound Anton Ferdinand (who you'd think was brought in because Bruce was worried against this exact match-up).

Balance and quality in the middle's often the winner for me and Dan's well up on that one but there's so much superiority in the rest of the pitch for Cal? IMO.

I'd just like to point out my team will play a similar style to the current United side (well shifted left to right)...

A solid defence with a very attacking fullback on one side in Uchida in the Evra role, Subotic will cover any gaps he leaves behind (esp given Dan is only playing 1 upfront). Bale for the Valencia role of steaming past the opposition fullback. Mata is as close as it comes to finding someone in a Rooney role in that age group, and he's been playing kind of a free role for Valencia CF this season anyway.

Granero & Anderson, whilst not the most inspiring partnership in the middle of the park, are both very very hard working and will cope with the defensive side of things, whilst playing the simple balls for Bale, Mata & Augusto to spring the attacks.

Dan for me, Anderson and Granero will be pegged back in midfield cutting off the supply to his attackers.

That is the plan. Neither Anderson nor Granero are first choice and both lack defensive qualities, my midfield will dominate

We've seen first hand what happens to us against lesser teams when our CM's get pushed back and over run. Hardly invincible.

Fallen behind over night, get your votes in people! Read my tactics before if you can, I reckon i could mastermind a victory

Also Cal, do you want to both vote for our own teams? It's annoying having to click on 'View Results' every time i open the thread...

Feel free to vote, I'm certainly going to before the end, just that I find it easier to look at who's voted before I've voted myself... ;)

Yep

Cal does have a bit of a weakness in CM though

On behalf of my assistant

ParkJiSy said:
Cal? Undoubtedly has attacking qualities, though it will be hard for him to utilise these with our abilities to keep hold of possesion in the midfield.

When he does attack, if we can win the ball back it sets up a cracking chance of a counter attack. Cals? front four are not the best at tracking back, leaving two midfielders who possess great quality on the ball but not so much without it.

You fancy our chances of springing into action with the pace of our left and right hand side, and with Jovetic cutting in, Pjanic finding killer passes, its hard to see that Cals? back four will hold out all game...

I just realized that not hiring an assistant is a bad idea, cost me at least a vote. :(

Anyway, still a slim lead heading into the latter stages... :nervous:

Won't cost you any points in this match... My assistant is in the newbies!

Talking about the newbies, wonder how their draft is going, think they're a few matches ahead of us...

Still a few hours for a dramatic comeback, get voting people!

I honestly believe this would be a close one, Cal has the attackers but how will they get the ball if their midfield can't give it to them? A Wilshere, Rodwell and Pjanic midfield will dominate Cal's less balanced midfield. Then I've got Jovetic and Capel have enough creativity to create chances.

Not sure many people have picked up on how Jovetic would be up against Uchida who is pretty iffy defensively. You could say the same for Bale vs Elmohammady though we have a defensive midfielder in Rodwell to help, whereas Uchida would have no support

I'd just like to re-iterate that Bale will have a lot of joy against Elmohammedy, in fact, Sunderland were so worried about that match-up that they played Anton Ferdinand against Bale recently.

Also, whilst 4-5-1 gives Dan a stronger midfield, leaving Derdiyok alone upfront leaves him very isolated. The partnership of Chicharito & Mata should be able to create and score goals against the best sides in the world. :)

I think the Bale vs Elmohamady situation is similar to Jovetic vs Uchida. The difference being my team having Rodwell to double up on Bale. Uchida will get no support from Anderson/Granero/Augusto leaving him exposed

My team will have Subotic to help out with Uchida, since you are only playing one upfront.

Dragging central defenders out wide is always risky, you want to keep your central defense close together. But fair enough

I voted for Dannistelrooy

Cant trust anyone who thinks Ronaldo is better than Messi.

 Not asking anyone to trust me here...

Hehe, seriously though, really don't rate your midfield at all. Granero, Anderson, Bale and Augusto can barely see them string 5 passes together.

Interesting... personally I think I've got by far the best wingers, even though the centre midfield isn't particularly inspiring, but very hard working...

Congrats to Cal on behalf of myself and ParkJiSy. Can't argue with those attackers at all. Can i suggest taking Wilshere instead of Granero or somehow take Wilshere and make your team a 4-2-3-1... If you find a way of doing that i think you're the man to beat! Good luck

Thanks Dan, I'm pretty much decided on Wilshere, just not 100% sure on my formation yet. :D

Congrats to Cal. If Dan had won this, I think he would've walked the competition with Hernandez up front.
