In a well-ordered universe...
Does anyone think the proposed FIFA universal calendar will ever go in effect?
I for one would like to see March-October used for League, Domestic Cup, and Continental Cup matches and November-February for international matches...not sure if this can ever work since the majority of leagues worldwide currently use August-May...but having one universal calendar would work for club and country in the ongoing tussle of players...
As an American football fan, I like the FIFA plan of a March-October domestic action. Why? Football (soccer here) can only challenge baseball and this is why it is played during the summer months. If it the universal calendar was during September-May months, the sport would challenge American football, basketball and hockey and would lose badly. It may not matter though here. It looks as though the MLS may not last through 2006. I hope soccer can last here and if the US Mens National team can sustain some success, and advance in the 2002 WC, it will go a long way to ensuring the continuing success of the sport here.
I'm sure some leagues and clubs like the FIFA plan. Especially the leagues that shut down during the harsh winter season. If the leagues played in the summer time, there would be no shutdown.
