He's so obviously universally regarded as the best defender in the world by a country mile. So why didn't we sign him instead of Rio ?

;)

Not as young, wouldn´t like our weather, and unlike Rio, would not be able to form a long term defensive partnership with Wes for the next 10 years for both us and England.

Simple really. :)

but surely if Nesta was sooo good, then we would've made HIM the most expensive defender in the world instead of Rio ehh.

So you're saying that he's not that good outside of Serie-A ? ;)

Nesta is sooooo good, but on the PL level would not have been the instant fix we needed - problems settling in, language, etc. The reverse is true of the CL, but as I don't think we will have a problem getting to the second round without Rio, by the time January comes around, Rio will be just as good in Europe Competition too.

first of all rio is younger by three years and is an emerging talent.also the fact that nesta said he did not want to leave italy.it makes no sense buying a player who does not want to play for you.

But if he was universally regarded as the worlds best defender, dont you think he could adapt and improvise. Ronaldo, when healthy and on form is the world's best striker, and yet there would be no doubt as to his successful impact in the Premiership - why is this not the case for Nesta ? Is it possible that he isn't the best, but rather just one of the best, since his skills only seem applicable if he stays in Italy. Players like Ronaldo, RVN, Rivaldo, Zidane etc would seem to be able to thrive irrespective of where they played - why isn't this the case for Nesta ?

Not quickly enough no.

nesta's a WC defender.. however he's been pants this season..(especially in the games i've seen) i think it was natural that we bought a player who's proven himself in England.. Nesta would've been more of a gamble. IMO.

still wouldn't mind him partnering Rio ;)

Head an shoulders no. I think he edges it though when on top form.

So would it be fair to say that he is sometimes the best defender in the world when on form, and sometimes not. In which case someone else would presumably also stand a chance to be the best while our Hero is having an off day, yes ? ;)

Simply because he doesn't want to play outside Italy. Maybe only for Real Madrid, the most famous and winningest club in the world. End of story.

Too bad for you, mates. And be sure that if he came to Man Utd, you could use a 1-7-2 squad: how many serious strikers are there in Premiership? Three, four? <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

 Drat. Imagine the amout of goals we would've scored by playing a 1-7-2.

I thought we were talking generally, not during a spell when Nesta is off form, which happens to all players from time to time.

One or two days in a year, sure. he he he!

Anyway, ask this question to all the guru and real experts in football world (not simply fans like you and I) and let's see what you get away with, mate?

Try with some more convincing tactics, won't you?
:p

Don't worry, you maybe got the second best, imho.

We particularly envy your ability to buy players without paying for them.

Ronaldo at the WC before or after the Brazil-England match? ha ha ah, you never lose your love for silly interviews, mate?
Did they ask Ronnie if Sandro let him touch the ball AT LEAST AFTER the match in Rome, the day they lost the Scudetto? I doubt it...
C'mon, is that all you are capable of?
:p

Money? Damn, I forgot my wallet again! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Yes, apparently he's so good that he routinely keeps Ronaldo in his pocket.

Ayala, Cannvaro - they're better than Nesta
Rio - couple of seasons - he will be.
we paid to buy off his contract, not just market valuation...

Ayala??? HA HA HA!!! <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

Samuel is good, very good. But not so elegant and key player. Maybe in te future, hopefully not!
But his lack of form in crucial matches prevented ass roma from winning again last season: Thank God! :p

Sorry mate , Real madrid might be famous in spain or europe and "WINNINGEST" club in the world but there is no Club Bigger than Manchester united , We have the largest supporter base in the world, we are the Richest club in the World and we win trophies.

1-7-2, shit mate, Lazio must be winning everything in Europe and Italy since they have this incredible defender. Nesta is very good and i like him alot, but lets not exagerate 1-7-2, ur smokin some strong SHIT.

Also aren't u guys in a financial Crisis ?????. How much do u think u would get for Lopez and Mendienta ??. You owe us money, so pay up or we will have the pick of your players.

Zidane is the best midfielder , why don't we sign him ??

Age and suitability played a big part in us signing Rio, Tried and Tested in the PL, thats what we needed. If we got Nesta for 5mln less then we still would have signed Rio. He fits the Manchester United mould, how well do u think Rio would fair if he went to an Italian club ?

How do you measure "Biggest Club in the World"?

I think Madrid are a richer club (judging by recent purchases), and probably have a larger fanbase than United. They have won more than us, be it Europe or domestic competitions by a large margin. Madrid would probably be a more appealing destination for a player than United, loyalties aside.

I've never met an Asian Real fan, nor have I met many Real fans in North America. Conversely there are plenty of Utd fans in those two areas.

which club have you been supporting mate ?

We have the largest fan base in the world and thats only Registered Supporters, We make more money than any club in the World which makes us the richest , the only reason REAL could afford those over priced players is because the goverment bailed them out. We are the most stable club in the world and thats based on our constant income.

I am from south africa and was brought up watching Manchester united play, i can gurantee you that there are over 1mln Manchester united supporters in South Africa alone, During the Champions League Semi finals, The television Channel that broadcasted the match estimated that 8million viewers watched the game here alone.

Thats only here , what about USA, Asia , Australia, etc. We are the biggest and Richest and have been for many years.

So fecking what? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />
If you ever try to compare Real Madrid's fame and trophies to your fan-base all over the world just to convince yourself that Man Utd are the best, you must be in serious drug problems, mate?

Sorry, but diamonds will always be MORE important than stones. :p

Look who's talking? Apart from you filthy riches, who else is so healthy and wealthy up there? Give us a break!

Damn, I'd pay to face the likes of Leiceser City, Fulham, Ipswich, Southampton, Boro, and so on and on, and on...
How lucky, you red devils, to have the chance of clashing against so many talented sides...

Mate which club do u support ?????? You are jumping onto Real Madrid's Band wagon when u are a Lazio supporter ??????? whose on drugs now?

Are Lazio more successful than us ??? <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />
Even if u don't pay us for Stam , we still will be able to buy more diamonds than you can, remember stones don't buy players or pay salaries. <img src="graemlins/yawn.gif" border="0" alt="[Yawn]" />

Are Lazio even the most popular club in Rome ? <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

I think Raoul is mishief making.
;)

Truth is when it comes to the world's elite players, judgement becomes subjective.

As for Nesta, Fergie was definitely interested in him. Nesta was reluctant to come to England. If he had wanted to come and Utd signed him then there would have been a element of RISK - would he settle? And, given the treatment Veron has received, would there be constant stories linking him with a return to Lazio?

Rio is also a World Class defender. There is no risk. He is proven in EPL and on the world stage.

Trying to compare the elite players becomes nonsensical. Who was the best player in the world - some say Pele, others Best, others Maradona.

Both Nesta and Rio are among the very best. We have Rio and he is the best option for Utd.
