I am not usually one to start/discuss speculation, but I noticed this today, and couldn't help thinking what a great signing he'd be :)

Lazio captain Alessandro Nesta has admitted that his future could lie away from the Biancocelesti if they fail to be successful this season.
Nesta, who was born and raised in Rome, has so far always claimed to want to stay with Lazio until the end of his career.
Now, however, he has admitted that his future with the Rome side will very much depend on his team's performances and placement in the league table when the season ends. Questioned about his future career moves, Nesta has said that he could not swear loyalty to his team forever.
"No, I couldn't do that," he admitted. "I'm a professional and I'm staying at Lazio because this allows me to play football for a top club.
"If Lazio were in Serie B, though, I wouldn't be here and I'd be a hypocrite to say that.
"I don't know what's going to happen next because in this sport, you have to live day by day, minute by minute and everyone has to look at what's best for himself.
"I am sure that Lazio have great ambitions for the future and I'm convinced that I'll stay but we'll see what happens."
In the last year, Nesta's name has often been linked to three prestigious clubs in Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Juventus.

Nesta is probably the most over-hyped centre back in football.
what would he cost?...a crippling £25 million...and for what?...the guy is no taller than Gary Neville and he certainly doesn't tackle any better.

maybe we should be investing that £25 million on our scouting network...because the only players I ever see our club linked with is the big established names that cost a fortune.

How about beating the Italians and Spanish to the real up and coming talent for once.

We do have a good scouting network

What we LACK is a sense of urgency and the ability to take calculated risks with starlets e.g. saviola, figo ten years ago

SS Lazio captain Alessandro Nesta says he may leave the club.
Lazio have an offer from Juventus for the Italian international with Real Madrid manager Jorge Valdano also back on the trail of the centre back.
Juve are offering defender Mark Iuliano and midfielder Gianluca Zambrotta for the 25 year old Nesta but Madrid have so far led the chase to sign the star.

Nesta

This morning's Daily Mail says Veron will have talks with Lazio about a return, and that we may make a move for Nesta. Could be a swap deal. There were however no quotes, so most probably bullshit. Mind you, I didn't believe SAF would extend his contract either.

While Alessandro Nesta is a class defender, I tend to agree with the notion the best defenders are in a pretty similar level.

I much prefer to see United spend less money on a younger player who'll improve in time.

But thats enough about Kevin Hofland. ;)

It may well be that Sir Alex staying means he'll be signing the dutch in the summer.

Also from Sports.com the same story, quoting the Sun:
While Alex Ferguson's decision to stay on as Manchester United manager seems likely to convince the likes of David Beckham to stay at the club, it seems that Juan Sebastian Veron is on his way out of Old Trafford.

According to The Sun, The Argentine, who has been largely disappointing since joining United, is due to meet with officials of his old club Lazio later today as he attempts to agree a return to Rome in the summer.

Veron hasn't played his best for United (Action Images)
United have repeatedly denied the reports in recent months, but if they do let him go, they will demand at least the £28.1 million they paid to bring him to Old Trafford in the summer.

To raise the money, the Sun says, Lazio will sell Italy international defender Alessandro Nesta.

The prospect of selling Nesta, the fans' favourite, may anger Lazio's fans but Veron remains a hero at the Stadio Olimpico, where he helped the club to their first Serie A title since 1974 just two seasons ago.

The 26-year-old also returned to Rome last week for treatment on an injury, and was given a standing ovation when he attended Lazio's game with Milan.

Like Nesta said, Lazio could be in Serie B soon! I doubt Seba would go back if that happened plus, I doubt he would go back if they sold their best defender either.

Basically, he's said 'hello' to all his old mates and employers and the tab's have turned it into 'talks about his return'.

Lazio aren't very likely to go down. However, I find it funny that Veron is 'the favourite son' who the crowd wants to they'll sell Nesta to get him.

Somehow I don't think the Lazio fans would appreciate selling Nesta very much!

i think thay should let veron go back. hes not as good as becks scoles kean.

Maybe it's your dream that Lazio could be in Serie B... Nesta said a different thing...

Nesta said that he will stay at Lazio until Lazio is a great team. He said that next year he will stay at Lazio.

In any case, if he will leave, he will choose Spain...

Firstly, Nesta is a magnificent defender. He does everything brilliantly, and would easily (and I do stress easily) be the best defender in the Premiership. Furthermore, he won't come to United or England IMO, if he leaves, it will be to Spain. Lastly, if we are talking about hyped up defenders, I think Hofland has to be one of them. I don't really see what all the fuss is about. He seems a lot like Wes in fact (no offense to Wes). He has good natural talent, makes foolish mistakes and easily has a lack of confidence. I would much rather take on Chivu than Hofland.

It's so nice to be able to say this: If Fergie chooses to bring Hofland in the summer (highly likely), who are we to argue? :D

Nesta and Walter Samuel are possibly two of the best centre-halfs in the world

Hofland has a long way to go to emulate these two

Chivu would be great for Utd unfortunately he plays on the left - what we really need is a right-back

I will shoot Cragnotti if he sells Nesta. He has already destroyed Lazio.

P.S Contra is on his way out from Milan and he is a great right back and could cover for Becks.

I don't really care what Lazio does tbh, especially as Jaap will take no more part in the 2001 - 2002 season.

Like most of the above said, Nesta won't come to the Prem' so any swap talk is a waste of time. United should be concentrating on the likes of Samuel or Mexes imo. Having Seba here could sway Walter to come and if Larry stays for another year, Mexes may just come too!

He's an attacking right back who, surprise surprise, was critisized by his Milan coachs for not being good enough in attack.

Silvestre 2?

Contra is a class RB, no doubt about it and from what I have heard from my Milan friends, is that the Milan coaches have been fecking up royally, and they are to blame mostly for their terrible tactics.

Chivu playes as a RB :)

And about Hofland i think he would do well with anyone experienced beside him, Ayala, Nesta... Whoever.

Chivu is greatly versatile, but his strongest position is on at either LB or LCB, not RB. He is naturally left-footed--although he is very capable with either foot. I would love to see Chivu at United, for he is far better than Hofland IMO.

well, as to Stam, on friday we'll know when he can play again... I hope in march  :(

as to Nesta: yes, he won't come to the PL, so no swap Nesta-Veron.

as to Samuel: Seba's friends are Crespo and Lopez, not Samuel... :p

NESTA UNSURE OF LAZIO FUTURE
by Peter O`Rourke

LAZIO captain Alessandro Nesta has indicated that he could leave The Biancoceleste one day.
The Italian international admitted that it would be wrong of him to say he would stay with the capital outfit for the rest of his career, and that he would most likely leave if they suffered relegation from Serie A.

The talented defender has attracted the interest of a number of Europe's top clubs with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus and Milan all thought to be keen to tempt away from Rome.

Nesta is a life-long Lazio fan and has come through the ranks at The Stadio Olimpico, but admitted you can never say never in football.

"I can't promise that I'll stay at Lazio forever," said Nesta. "I am professional and I play for Lazio because it is a great team and because it allows me to play at high levels.

"If Lazio was in Serie B I wouldn't be here. To say that I would stay with Lazio in any case, is pathetic ,and foolish towards the fans.

The 25-year-old, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, admitted that he has high hopes for Lazio and that he had no reason to leave.

"I don't know what will happen because in the world of football we live day by day," said Nesta. "I am sure that Lazio have great ambitions, so there is no reason for me to move from here. I want to stay and I am convinced that I will."

Nesta's comments will raise hopes among the interested cubs that they can possibly prize the defender away from Lazio in a multi-million pound raid.

Personally I'd much rather Utd. signing Mexes and Hofland for less money... They'd be more commited to the club, not having played for very big clubs in the past..and if Nesta joins..there'd be annoying speculation from day 1 that he is going back to Lazio(as wiht Veron) and that really pisses me off

Nesta is a world class defender but I do not see utd being able to offer him the wage package he'd expect besides he seems to be the primary target of Real this Summer to replace hiero.
As for Hofland...Totally overated! chivu is much better but Mexes is who we need.

I've heard that too and it's been said quite a few times in the last 2 years that he would like to go to Spain, where he has been praised by that minor team called Real Madrid.
I can only say that Nesta is a super-champion, fantastic defender, leader on the field and off the field.
Having him at OT would be simply sensational, but, again, I think that when a player gets a call from the more important club in the history of football is hard not to accept.

What about Nesta and Kluivert in the summer? Nesta has said that his future may lie eleswhere and as for Kluivert, Sky Sports News has been running a story all morning about how he is not ruling out a move to England. He has also said that Liverpool had a bid turned down by Barcelona. Maybe the board are willing to celebrate Sir Alex Ferguson decision to stay and give him a large budget like last summer, so that next season we can win the league and Champions League two years running.

Kluivert, what a character. The guy has the talent to be the single best striker of this generation. No offense to Ruud, Kluivert is better, but he also seems slightly less interested sometimes and his work ethic is not in the same class. If Kluivert promised to be a good boy and work his arse off, I would pick him over any striker in the world.

As for Nesta...Well, he is the perfect defender, but if he leaves Lazio, it won't be to United.
